16 January 2013, Singapore – The inaugural Skyscanner Asia Pacific Airline Food Awards have recognised Tiger Airways, Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia for the economy class in-flight meals. Decided by a panel of over 200 international travellers and bloggers from the Asia Pacific region, the in-flight food in economy class of 23 flag carriers and low cost carriers were rated based on taste, presentation, choice for the full service airlines and by value for money for the low cost airlines.
The Low Cost Airline category was won by Singapore based Tiger Airways. Its competitors in the category included Scoot, AirAsia, Korean airline Jeju Air and China’s Spring Airlines.
In the Short Haul category, Singapore Airlines took the top followed by Garuda Indonesia, Korean Air, Philippine Airlines and China Southern.
For the Long Haul category, Garuda Indonesia triumphed over Korean Air, Singapore Airlines, AirAsia X and Air China.
Three airlines including Korean Air, Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines made it to top five in both the short and long haul categories.
Skyscanner has also revealed that 39% of 1400 international travellers surveyed believe overall quality of airline food was ‘good and improving’, with chicken winning the age old “beef or chicken”. 43% admitted that they were envious of their neighbour’s choice of meal. 28% ordered a special diet meal with 8% choosing that because it “tasted better” than the regular meal.
I personally enjoy airline food. And the airlines I feel offers great meals include Cathay Pacific, Singapore Airlines and Emirates.
