SWISS has modified its cockpit safety procedures as a precautionary measure with immediate effect. When either of the two pilots be absent from the cockpit during the flight, another crew member must be present in the cockpit with the remaining pilot.
This precautionary measure is a result of the recent Germanwings 9525 tragedy and advice from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
“People should be re-assured that flying remains the safest way to travel. Any accident is one too many. People can take further confidence in the well-established and constant determination of the aviation industry and governments to make this safe industry even safer. Each day about nine million people board aircraft as passengers. We work as hard as possible to earn and keep their trust by transporting them safely to their destination,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) represents some 250 airlines comprising 84% of global air traffic.
Airlines comply with the safety regulations and procedures of their national governments, and this includes procedures with respect to cockpit access and medical requirements.
