21 June 2012, Singapore – Do you check in on-line? As a result of Facebook users checking-in online wherever they are, Facebook recently released infographics on the most social landmarks in 25 cities worldwide . Among the number 1 ranked landmarks across the 25 cities, there are
- 7 sports stadiums/arenas
- 6 public areas such as squares/avenues/parks and gardens
- 2 amusement parks
- 2 concert arenas
- 2 shopping-related such as shopping centres/malls
Some other interesting findings include:
- Shopping is popular internationally with malls and outdoor markets within the top 10 landmarks for 19 of 25 cities.
- Amusement Parks such as Johannesburg’s Gold Reef City, Moscow’s Gorky Park, Copenhagen’s Tivoli Gardens and Seouls Lotte Worlds or Singapore’s Universal Studios were among the top 10 places to check-in
- Restaurants such as Hard Rock Cafes in Buenos Aires, Delhi and Barcelona or TGI Fridays in Norway and Bella Paulista Casa de Paes in Sao Paulo were favourites
- Warmer climate cities had more check-ins to outdoor spots e.g. St. Kilda Beach in Melbourne and Wynyard Quarter Wharf in Auckland.
- Colder climate cities had more check-ins at concert halls or bars. Six of Moscow’s 10 most popular spots were bars and clubs.
Summer Trends from Facebook Check In data
- Music Festival appear as top summer check-ins: Glastonbury and Lollapalooza
- Sports venues ranked high in the US, with Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco each featuring stadiums or arenas in their top 10
- Baseball was popular in Tokyo where the Tokyo Dome won out whilst other cities saw popularity in soccer, rugby and cricket venues
