Secluded Luxury at CABN X Kangaroo Island: Cape St Albans Retreat Amid Kangaroos & Nature

Escape to the serene eastern tip of South Australia’s Kangaroo Island, where kangaroos and sheep outnumber people and light pollution is a distant memory. CABN X Kangaroo Island, located on Cape Saint Albans, offers just five exclusive cabins for a truly secluded retreat. There’s no check-in desk or housekeeping on-site, so you’re mostly left to your own devices, along with the other guests staying in the remaining four cabins.

While the isolation might feel daunting at first, you’ll soon embrace the tranquillity—where even the occasional lack of cell service adds to the peaceful charm.

Once the sun sets, darkness takes over. Allow your eyes to adjust, and you’ll be able to spot the starlit skies as well as the Milky Way. We’ve even created a tutorial video to help you capture stunning photos on your own.

The cabins are fully outfitted for a luxurious escape, featuring a cosy king bed for two and a glass moon roof for stargazing.

You’ll find a kitchenette with all the essentials for preparing meals, including a bar fridge, sink, Nespresso coffee machine, toaster, microwave oven, and utensils—making it feel just like home. A sourdough loaf, a tray of chicken eggs, fresh milk, and butter, along with tomatoes and ham, were included during our stay.

An indoor gas fireplace provides warmth and cosiness during winter, while a ceiling fan ensures proper ventilation. The cabin is also equipped with air conditioning for added comfort.

I expected the bathroom to be small, but we were pleasantly surprised. It featured a spacious bathtub with a view, a separate shower and toilet, and even a sauna. Since it was too warm in March to enjoy the sauna, it’s probably better suited for the cooler months. It was so hot I had to fill the tub with cold water to cool off.

Bath and cleaning amenities provided are from Zero Co, a sustainability-driven company that offers refillable everyday products. Their system focuses on reducing single-use plastics by providing refillable pouches for items such as body wash and detergent. Customers can return the empty pouches for cleaning and reuse, creating a closed-loop solution. The company aims to tackle the global plastic waste issue by making eco-friendly living more convenient.

The outdoor deck chairs and bathtub are perfect for sipping coffee or hot chocolate while taking in stunning sunrise or sunset views, with kangaroos and other wildlife grazing nearby. A Weber Q gas BBQ pit is great for a steak or BBQ party, weather permitting, though a fire ban prevented us from using it. Don’t forget to grab a bottle or two of wine from Dudley or False Cape vineyards to complete the experience.

The drive to the gated confines of CABN X on Kangaroo Island is nothing short of breathtaking, as the scenic road winds beneath a lush tree canopy that stretches out for miles. In autumn, this canopy transforms into a stunning tapestry of warm, earthy tones—rich browns, golden yellows, and deep rusts—creating a mesmerising journey that feels like nature’s own artwork. The rustling of leaves and the crispness in the air add to the enchanting atmosphere, making the approach to CABN X a truly serene experience, where the beauty of the landscape sets the perfect tone for the retreat ahead.

After completing your reservation, you’ll receive detailed arrival instructions, including the gate access code and the lockbox code to retrieve your cabin key. Each cabin is uniquely named, and the one we stayed in, Eddie, was located at the bottom of the hill.
