QANTAS has increased its variety and serving of its meals in Economy Class for flights from Singapore to Australia. Singapore is the first Asian city QANTAS has introduced this new Economy dining.

Launched last week on flights from Singapore to Australia, the Australian airline now offers three instead of two choices with a fourth with Select on Q-Eat (available for flights out of Australia for now and will be available for flights from Singapore to Australia from March this year), a meal pre-order service which was once available only to Business and Premium Economy guests.

New meal categories have been introduced including a healthy option, comfort food as well as a meal inspired by the route which includes Rice Noodles, Vegetables and Tofu with soy chilli and garlic on Singapore flights.

Shortly after take off, guests get to enjoy a Bickford’s signature welcome drink with exclusive flavours including Lemon and Elderflower, Pink Grapefruit and Pomegranate and Blueberry. Or you may ask for a glass of Wolf Blass Sparkling Chardonnay Pinot Noir or other Australian wines. Spirits served on board include Bacardi White Rum, Beefeater Kibdib Dry Gin, Finlandia Vodka, Bundaberg Dark Rum, Jack Daniel’s Tennessee Whiskey and Jamson Irish Whisky.

For flights out of Singapore to Australia, you get a choice of dinner dishes including Parmesean crumbed pork with tomato relish, potato wedges, broccoli and carrots; Paneer butter masala, curried cauliflower, potato and peas with steamed rice or a healthier choice of Grilled chicken salad with quinoa and pomegranate. I had the chance to try the Parmesean crumbed pork and Grilled Chicken and was pleasantly surprised the taste and quality. Portions were a tad too much for me, but hey I would not complain.

And on return flights back to Singapore, pulled wagyu beef sliders with capsicum and tomato relish is available from Q Eat while Malteses and fresh fruit are available from the self-serve grazing option.

Another thoughtful initiative is the herb bread. It comes with butter and herb spread in side the bread. No more struggling with spreading frozen butter on buns you get in flight. I’d prefer the variety of breads, warm and soft butter and a serving of olive oil in Business Class anytime.

With a new way of serving food, the trays we are used to seeing are no longer used. Instead, a new serving plate with anti-slide rubber underlining which offers 50% more food than before is placed on your tray table during meal times. Recently, one of our writers flew on Qatar Airways to Egypt, and he was sharing his frustration of the food trays sliding while he was having his meal. So we are glad Qantas has this thought through for the convenience of its customers.

This new serving plate helps to reduce the time cabin crews require to serve and clear the meals by up to 30 minutes.

This new Economy dining was first launched on 25 November last year on QANTAS’ Melbourne-Dubai-London route followed by Sydney-Dubai-London one day later From then till 13 January 2015, this was also rolled out to flights to Tasman, Perth-Auckland, Los Angeles, New York and Dallas/Fort Worth and Vancouver. Guests on flights to Hong Kong will be able to enjoy this from 10 February while flights to Santiago, Johannesburg, Honolulu, Bangkok, Shanghai, Narita, Manila, Jakarta and Noumea will offer this from 1 March this year.
