The Unlisted Collection group’s 11-year-old hotel, New Majestic Hotel, will be closing its doors on 1 June 2017. Bookings on newmajestichotel.com are open until 14 May 2017.
The boutique hotel housed in a traditional conservation shop house in the heart of Chinatown has been offering guests a home away from home with an emphasis on design, local culture and the arts. The open concept period-inspired lobby with restored vintage Compton fans, a dramatic pool with glass inserts floating above the restaurant and the selection of period colonial furniture from Singapore in the 1920s to the 1960s will be missed by fans of the hotel.
The hotel has five design concept rooms. Fluid was designed by fashion designer Wykidd Song. Work was designed by Graphic Designer Theseus Chan. Wayang was designed by film and theatre director Glen Goei and the room is inspired by legendary Chinese film-director Zhang Yimou’s movies such as Raise the Red Lantern and Judou. Untitled was designed by Patrick Chia, a furniture designer from Squeeze designs. The Pussy Parlour was designed by fashion show producer Daniel Boey and is the most extravagant and outrageous room the hotel featuring fuchsia and turquoise accents, French chandeliers, a striking brass bed, neon lights and mirrors.
“New Majestic Hotel holds great sentimental value to me. It is one of my first hotel ventures and, in many ways, Unlisted Collection’s flagship hotel. But when a golden opportunity comes up at the perfect time, you have to take it. To grow, you have to be open to change,” says Mr Loh Lik Peng.
The Unlisted Collection attributes the closure to the changing hospitality landscape over the past decade. It is relooking at the current market to find how it should reposition itself. To commemorate 11 years of service, an appreciation party will be held for all staff and their families. A memory wall will also be set up in the hotel lobby for the public to share their memories or pen their thoughts from 28 April to 20 May 2017.
The Unlisted Collection was founded in 2011 and is the umbrella brand of boutique hotels and restaurants in Singapore, London, Shanghai and Sydney. The hotels are set within heritage listed buildings which have been sensitively restored and re-adapted into radical, cutting edge lifestyle concepts. It has seven boutique hotels and twenty restaurants today since its first property opened in 2000.
Unlisted Collection’s other hotels in Singapore include the Wanderlust Hotel and Hotel 1929. Other hotels include Town Hall and 196 Bishopsgate in London and The Waterhouse at South Bund in Shanghai.
Its restaurant portfolio in Singapore includes The Provision Shop, Burnt Ends, Meatsmith, Salted and Hung, Bincho, Meat Smith at Cocotte, Esquina, Jing Seafood Restaurant, Longplay, Majestic Bay Seafood Restaurant, Majestic Restaurant, Pollen, Cheek by Jowl and The Market Grill.
