26 May 2012, Singapore – Singapore gets a new International Cruise Terminal which was officially named Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore (MBCCS) on 22 May 2012 by Mr. S Iswaran, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Officer and Second Minister for Home Affairs and Trade & Industry. Asia constitutes only nine percent of the total global cruise market share by revenue, according to www.cruisemarketwatch.com.
The cruise industry here has been on an uptrend with cruise passenger throughput at a compounded annual growth rate of 3.6% from 2002 to 2011, reaching close to one million passengers last year. The cruise industry here has generated some S$520 million in direct spending in 2010 while providing 3,365 persons direct and indirect employment in the cruise industry.
The new cruise centre is 28,000 square metres big and can handle 6,800 passengers at any one time, doubling the berth capacity of Singapore’s other cruise terminal at HarbourFront. The MBCCS will complement the HarbourFront cruise terminal which will soon complete a S$14 million rejuvenation programme.
Now the world’s largest cruise ships can berth in Singapore allowing the cruise industry here to grow. Southeast Asia offers more than 25,000 islands, warm climate and calm waters, with diverse and attractive destinations.
New and varied product cruise offerings can be expected. Celebrity Cruises’ will home port out of Singapore for the first time later in the year and is expected to make 10 ship calls during the 2012/2013 season. Costa Cruises will also deploy a second ship, Costa Atlantica, to join Costa Victoria in Singapore next May. Other cruisesliners such as Holland American Line’s Zaandam and Seabourn Cruises’ Seabourne Quest are also going to make maiden calls to Singapore.
In 2012, 9 maiden calls are expected here which almost doubles the number of new sailings last year. The official opening ceremony of MBCCS is expected to be in late 2012.
