Lufthansa and Rimowa were jointly awarded the prize for “Best Baggage Initiative” at the FTE-Future Travel Experience airline industry conference held in Las Vegas on 10 September 2015.
The annual awards serves to recognise companies for their forward-thinking ideas and initiatives that create a more comfortable travel experience for passengers.
The Rimowa Electronic Tag is the world’s first digital and fully integrated mobile solution for luggage. Today, airlines affix a paper luggage tag to the bags by hand when you check in. Lufthansa passengers will soon be able to check in their luggage from home or on the go with the Lufthansa App by using the Rimowa Electronic Tag. Data will be transferred from the electronic boarding pass from your smartphone to your luggage equipped with the Rimowa Electronic Tag via bluetooth. The luggage tag will be shown immediately on the data module integrated into the suitcase. At the airport, you can place the luggage on the belt at the Lufthansa Baggage Drop Off counter.
The luggage data indicated on the electronic data module is the same size and shape as today’s paper tags. The information is protected from humidity, heat, low temperatures, impact and concussion, and cannot be torn off.
This product will be launched early next year, after completion and evaluation of the recently implemented test phase.
