The vibrant city of Hong Kong is home to many hotels, be it those from the global hotel groups, boutique ones or even service apartments. We particularly like to stay in the boutique ones, some of which are located close to MTR stations, shopping areas or even quaint neighbourhoods where you can easily pop into an eatery and eat like a local. Boutique hotels tend to be less restricted with the way they run hotels.
The 91-room Mira Moon Hotel opened in November 2013 and is a member of Design Hotels, the hotel group that has members that pride themselves in design. Located two blocks from Times Square with the closest MTR station at Causeway Bay, Mira Moon is convenient to walk around. Surrounding the hotel are some food & beverage options making it easy for you to access local food and even seafood around the corner.
Last June, I stayed in the Full Moon Room 2805, a spacious corner room when I was in Hong Kong for Hong Kong Tourism Board’s Summer Campaign, Swim Art at Harbour City as well as Cathay Pacific’s unveiling of The Pier, the new First Class Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport.
The room is spacious and I like the touches of red, wood and white in the room. There are also my other thoughtful touches including electrical sockets by the bed side, complimentary soft drinks from the mini bar amongst others.
Bathrooms come with a separate shower area and a bathtub.
The Moonshine Suite for the Discerning
I was given a tour of the Moonshine Suite which left me in awe even after I exited the suite. Walk into the Moonshine Suite, and you walk into a bar area and a living room that is big enough to hold a Chinese wedding tea ceremony. And the red theme is actually quite apt for an auspicious wedding!
Walk further in and you get to sit comfortably on the black leather sofa to watch television or get some work done on the iMac. Throughout the suite, there is a floor to ceiling glass view. Space is what you get in this suite so you can decide which area you prefer to be at.
When you get into the bedroom, the king size bed is seemingly inviting, And once again, there is so much space! Design elements throughout the suite is impressive yet not over-the-top.
The mural in the bathroom depicting a garden creates a space for you to enjoy a bath in a tub with luxurious supply of amenities. Bathrobes for him and her are hung close by next to the bathtub so you do not get a chill after a bath. Two separate basins in the bathroom together with the bathtub and shower is testament that you won’t find space a constraint.
The Amenities
True to its design element, even the toiletries play around with the Chinese character. It’s all that you will usually need even when travelling – body scrub, body lotion, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, dental set and comb. We’ve been told that these are popular with guests of the Mira Moon, who often bring them back as souvenirs.
The amenities come individually packed to ensure that they are not used and sanitary.
Nespresso Coffee is available in your room so you can make yourself a nice hot cuppa coffee anytime you need one. All within the comfort of your own room, making it feel as if you are at home.
Bottles of complimentary water are provided. Everyone expects that in Asia.
It seems to be a trend in Hong Kong for hotels to provide guests with a personal handy phone in their rooms allowing guests to use free data as well as to even make complimentary international countries to an impressive number of countries including Singapore. Many would use this as a data hotspot while they use their own smartphones around town. Convenient so you can continue to use apps such as your social media accounts, Whatsapp, wechat or any other messaging apps. Do be mindful that this does use up a lot of power on the Handy Phone as well as your own smartphone so remember to bring along a power bank to rejuice.
The Food and Drink
The Mira Moon offers a few food and beverage options within the hotel building. Our favourite would have to be the Champagne Bar especially when there are happy hour promotions which are extremely value for money if you enjoy your drink.
It was a hangout for me and a friend one of the nights where we drank ourselves happy till happy hour ended at around 9pm.
Breakfast, lunch and dinner is served at the Supergiant Tapas and Bar. Order a-la carte. You can have a hearty meal here without having to step out of the hotel if the weather gets too hot especially during summer.
If it ain’t too hot, then there is a covered open-air alfresco area as well.
I would definitely stay at the Mira Moon Hotel in Hong Kong again, just because I like the rooms. The red elements of the room and hotel are not too jarring for me. In fact, after getting accustomed to it, it was actually quite pleasing.
Mira Moon Hotel Hong Kong is located at 388 Jaffe Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
