Taxi services are still in SUPER DUPER high demand during peak hours of the day in Singapore. So GrabTaxi, one of the most popular & fastest location based taxi booking app in Singapore, has introduced GrabCar (Economy) to be an alternative for commuters when taxi supply does not meet demand.
GrabCar (Economy) is a private hire vehicle booking service on the GrabTaxi App that determines its fare based on the distance between your pickup location and destination, along with surcharges on time, location and demand.
After trying GrabCar (Economy) services to my regular destinations for the past couple weeks, the price is comparative to what I would pay for a regular booked cab ride. I do not need to worry if I am caught in jam or the driver takes a big detour, since fares are fixed* once you book the service. Costs for GrabCar rides are fully transparent and provided before I make my bookings, so it gave me the opportunity to accept or decline the fare.

GrabCar (Economy) comes in vehicles like Toyota Corolla, Toyota Wish and Honda Civic. I feel that the drivers are friendlier and more relaxed while driving instead of rushing for time, making me feel safer when commuting with them. Sometimes when a friend spots me dropping off. I would be asked “Who sent you here?” and my reply “My father lor. LOL”
The taxi industry in Singapore has evolved so much in the past couple of years. And with more services like GrabCar, we will benefit from these changes and get better services at more competitive fares.

How GrabCar (Economy) Charges
- Base on distance, time, location and demand
- Yourfarewill be shown on the app once you enter the pick-up point, drop-off point, and pick up time (for advanced bookings). Where applicable, surcharges applytothisfare for ERP,additional stops,andadditional waiting time
- Additional stops are chargeable at S$5 per stop if the additional distance travelled is less than 5 km. For distances equal to 5km and above, passengers will have to create a new booking. Maximum number of additional stops is 3
- Additional waiting time: S$5 per 10 mins
- The fare is calculated by the app according to the following formula:
Base Fare S$3 + S$0.70 Per KM + Advanced Booking Fee $5 (if applicable) + Surcharge (if applicable)
Surcharges are dependent on time, location and demand. - Hourly hire is available at S$35 per hour (min 2 hours). Simply key in “SG GC ECONOMY” into the drop off location and select the relevant option to book
