Review: Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station

Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station

Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station joins the Courtyard by Marriott Ginza in Tokyo to be the second property of the same brand name and the fifteenth Marriott property. Be careful not to confuse both properties. I spoke to one of the guests from the Philippines during my stay who told me she had mistaken the Courtyard Marriott Ginza property when booking and actually checked into the wrong hotel.

Located less than five minutes walk from the Yaesu South exit of Tokyo Station or a minute away from the Tokyo Metro Ginza line or five minutes from Takaracho Station on the Toei Askausa line, this new 150-guest room hotel celebrated its official opening on 2 April 2014. The hotel takes up the first four floors of the 21-storey Kyobashi Trust Tower, the mixed-development building in the Kyobashi commercial district.

The hotel is 28 minutes from Haneda Airport via the rapid service trains on the Toei Asakusa Line to Takaracho Station or 54 minutes from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station via the Narita Express.

Check in on the fourth floor reception and that is also where you can find a library bar and a separate public smoking room. There are self-service kiosks for quick check in and check out.

There are two food and beverage outlets operated by the hotel on the first floor and the guest rooms are on levels two to four.

GG Co. cafe and bakery serve pastries and bread, fresh sandwiches, salads, wraps and healthy deli items for takeaway or dine in. Enjoy a cup of coffee or tea to go together with your food. The cafe is open from 8am to 8pm with indoor and outdoor seating.

On the opposite side is Lavarock restaurants which is named for its lava-rock grill. Buffet breakfasts are served here. Contemporary bistro fare and grilled specialities are available for lunch and dinner. You can also enjoy a drink at the bar before it closes at 11pm daily.

There is a 24 hour gym which I didn’t get the chance to check out. Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the  entire hotel. If you have an Android phone, you can also use it to access your rooms without a key.

The rooms at the Courtyard Marriott Tokyo Station are basic and small. Needless to say, the room was clean, being a newly opened hotel. There are also women-only rooms which provide privacy and amenities for female guests.

I stayed in Room 243 at JPY34,000 for a night as rooms in Tokyo that week were fully booked for the Cherry Blossom season as well as a large Opthamology conference.

Rooms do not come with a work desk. Instead you get two chairs and a small side table. By the bed side is a bar fridge with only two bottles of complimentary water. Rooms do not come with any tea and coffee making facilities.

There is a 24 hour Family Mart convenience store within walking distance where you can stock up on a variety of affordable beverages, ready to heat up meals or desserts as well as any personal effects that you forgot to bring on your trip. Travel Tip: Umbrellas are also sold readily in convenience stores should it rain.

There were around four two-pin electrical sockets within the room with one by the side of the bed which is thoughtful so you can charge your smart phone or tablet while using them before going to bed. Bring your own travel adapter.

Shower Room and Toilet

Similar to the design of the room, the toilet is compact and houses the basin an automatic bidet toilet bowl as well as a two-in-one bathtub and shower area. Fresh soft towels are provided. A brush comb, tooth brush, shaver, shower cab, ear buds and cotton swabs as well as a body moisturiser, shower gel, shampoo and conditioner from Nirvae botanicals.

As the hotel lobby is on the fourth floor, there is no staff on the first floor who could help you get a taxi and tell the driver where you would be heading to which would be most useful in a country that does not speak much English.

Courtyard by Marriott Tokyo Station is owned by Mori Trust Hotels & Resorts Co Ltd. It opened the Tokyo Marriott Hotel in Shinagawa in December last year.

To celebrate its opening, there is a “My New Stay” plan from now till 2 July 2014 for JPY26,500. This offer comes with a one-night stay for two and includes a welcome drink, buffet-style breakfast and a commemorative gift.
