Climbing up bridges – not something for the faint-hearted. But think of the view you’ll get atop any bridge around the world.
This particular Twilight Bridge Climb I climbed in August this year, the Brisbane Story Bridge in Australia was smaller in size and height compared to the Sydney Harbour Bridge I climbed a few years back. A guide will give you a commentary about the history of the bridge as well as the city of Brisbane.
The sunset view of the city of Brisbane from the summit of the bridge was breathtakingly spectacular. The priceless surreal yet peaceful feeling was surprisingly relaxing even though I had a fear of heights. from the bridge, you are able to get a view of Brisbane City, the river, mountain ranges and Moreton Bay Islands.
If you are going to climb the Story Bridge, be sure to set aside around three hours and please do not consume alcohol. It takes that long for the safety briefing as well as the actual climb. You’ll have to book your climb online in advance and fees range from A$99 and above.
The Story Bridge took five years to construct and opened for operation on 6 July 1940, costing £1,492,000. The Story Bridge is the largest steel bridge designed, fabricated and constructed in Australia by Australians. The bridge is 1,072 metres long with a 74 metres height when measuring its summit to the ground. To put that perspective, that is the height of a 22-storey building. The width of the bridge which includes the footpaths is 24 metres wide. Some of the other interesting facts about the bridge that you would soon learn after participating in the adventure climb include:
- 39,100 cubic meters were excavated for foundations
- 41,250 cubic metres of concrete were used
- 12,000 tonnes of structural steel were used
- 1,650 tonnes of reinforcing steel were used
- 1,500,000 rivets were used to construct the bridge
- 17,500 litres of paint is used every seven years to repaint the bridge
