One of the best places in the world to score some epic vintage finds is in The Big Apple. For the casual shopper, knowing where to hunt for the best buys in New York City may prove daunting. Knowing how difficult it is to separate stores with a barely-used Chanel purse from one filled with mothball fumes, we’ve combed through the city to share five of the best vintage shops with you.
Amarcord Vintage Fashion
Step into a haven of vintage pieces from the 1940s to 1960s, personally selected by owner Patti Bordoni. A plethora of disco era wear (think groovy outfits with sequins and sparkle) line the walls while exclusive luxury European items hover in a corner at the entrance. In the middle of the boutique, wander over to the display of accessories and jewelry such as necklaces, bracelets, brooches and rings (of gold and pearls). Snag classic Salvatore Ferragamo leather belts (US$90) and Bruno Magli pumps from the 1960s (US$267) as you chat with the friendly and knowledgeable staff dressed in vintage pieces of sartorial elegance.

Buffalo Exchange
Rebel against the doldrums of mass production and dig deep for adventurous pattern mixing, statement jewels, funky faux fur, leather trims and more quirky items. Don’t expect high-end fashion labels—items here are mostly pre-loved pieces from the 1960s (with prices that go as low as US$10). Thriving on individuality, jewelry and accessories here make great as separates as well as layering. If you’re unsure of how a piece looks on you or how to style it up, casually broach the subject with any of the staff. They’ll hook you up with hidden gems from the store and have you looking like royalty in no time.

Eleven Consignment Boutique
A treasure trove for luxurious vintage fashion, Eleven Consignment Boutique is one of the few shops where you’ll find desired pieces by upscale boutique brands like Chanel, Fendi, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and Versace. While prices may be a tad steep, the final payout is still a fraction of the market price for your newly coveted handbag. Items here rotate regularly, so if you see a Chanel purse you like, buy it. We reckon it won’t be there the next time you pop in.

Screaming Mimis
A melting pot of styles and trends, Screaming Mimis feature a meticulous curation of vintage and new goods. Housing racks of clothes (as long as runways) from the 1930s to 1960s, paddle through this oasis and you’re bound to stumble upon irresistible finds like a crocodile skinned clutch (US$150) or vintage sunnies (US$20) from the 1940s, or a range of Aigner and Coach purses (US$100) from the 1960s. Shoes here are a real steal as well. If you manage to find your size, expect to pay an estimated US$60 for a pair of Salvatore Ferragamo leather pumps, or Jimmy Choos and Louboutins from US$200.

Tokio 7
An incredibly selection for both men and women, it’s unlikely that you’ll leave Tokio 7 empty handed. Leave your man at the back of the store where an extensive selection of blazers, jackets and hats covet the shelves. Nab an array of high-fashion brands at wallet-friendly prices—we’re talking items like a Tod’s handbag (US$150), silk Yves Saint Laurent scarf (US$100) or Miu Miu handbag (US$150). We personally copped ourselves a Helmut Lang dress at US$60, so you can be sure we’ll be back soon.
