RIMOWA showcased its Electronic Tag baggage for the first time at the FTE Global 2015 in Las Vegas and was awarded the ‘Best Baggage Initiative‘ award at the show.
Lufthansa is the launch partner and has rolled this out for customers flying with them. In the six months Lufthansa and RIMOWA rolled out this service, over 7,500 users are on the RIMOWA mobile app, over 5,500 Electronic Tag baggage are being used on over 2,000 flights.
The RIMOWA baggage with Electronic Tag costs around S$100+ more than those without. This means the cost of this new technology and convenience does not increase the prices of these bags too much. EVA will go live with the Electronic Bag Tag from 1 December 2016. For this technology to work, more airlines need to implement this. Condor and UNITED are currently in testing phase. It is afterall the future of travel.
We’ve heard so much about it and today was our first time experiencing it at the RIMOWA store at #01-11 Mandarin Gallery. We were told that the Electronic Tag screen is made with some sort of Gorilla Glass and is 10 times sturdier than the mobile phone screens.
Benefits of the Electronic tag include:
- Save time when checking in with faster drop offs.
- No more sticky handles from the paper tag glue. By the way the glue is also not so recyclable.
- No more irritating serialised stubs pasted on your baggage.
- You can track the location of your bag at your own convenience.
- No more worries of paper tags falling off in transit leading to misplaced baggage.
It is actually quite easy to use. Just make sure you follow the steps below and you are ready to fly without any hassles.
Step 1. Download the RIMOWA app and airline app to pair with your luggage.
If you are using the RIMOWA Electronic Tag for the first time download the RIMOWA mobile app which is available for iPhone and Android phones.
Step 2. Turn on the Electronic Tag
Open up the RIMOWA baggage and press the button just behind the screen of the Electronic Tag. This will turn on the bluetooth for 30 seconds giving you enough time to pair your mobile app with the tag. Make sure that you have put in the two AAA batteries to operate the button. RIMOWA has chosen to use AAA batteries because they are easy to replace and readily available anywhere, even at airports.
And because the RIMOWA Electronic Tag has an always off functionality when it is not in use, the technology is flight safe.
Step 3. Pair your Electronic Tag with your RIMOWA Mobile App
Match the serial number on the bottom left of the electronic tag on your RIMOWA mobile app and wait for the Electronic Tag to be paired.
Step 4. Turn on Your Airline Mobile App to pair with the Tag After You Have Checked In
You need to download the airline mobile app. That is Lufthansa in this case. You will need to check in and receive a mobile boarding pass. You will be prompted to request the Smart Bag function. Turn on the electronic tag on your RIMOWA baggage and the App identifies your bag ID and the information is pushed via bluetooth. A tag receipt is also saved to the airline app and you can then track the whereabouts of your baggage. This function kinda reminds me of what Delta Airlines offers to its passengers via the Delta Mobile App.
Step 5. The Electronic Tag is Properly Synced
All the relevant information that you would usually find on the paper tags will appear on the electronic tag. If you are flying in first or business class or are a higher tier frequent flyer member, the Electronic Tag would be tagged Priority so you enjoy the priority baggage handling at the airport you arrive in. No need any extra paper tags.
Once the Electronic Tag is synchronised, it stays there even when the batteries die off so you don’t have to worry about it fading away.
And when you are not flying, you can even personalise your Electronic Tag with one of the preset images or any of your own images. You can add in details such as your name and contact details.
If you prefer a baggage without the Electronic Tag, go for RIMOWA’s Classic Flight and Salsa Air collection. The rest of the check-in sizes for the other collections are available. RIMOWA is available at stores at #01-11 Mandarin Gallery, #B2M-217/218 The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands Casino Level and #01-476 Suntec City (North Wing).
I would love to find a way to buy this in some kind of add-on to my Ipanema Blue Salsa pieces. But I’m especially disappointed it’s not being offered on the Salsa Air. I need a lighter 30″ piece, but I’m unwilling to pay hundreds of dollars for a piece that doesn’t have this latest technology. Disappointing.
