HUAWEI P40 Series – Five Rear Camera System & 7680fps Ultra Slow-Mo

Huawei is pushing the boundaries of mobile photography again with the new HUAWEI P40 series with three variants for the new series. There’s the P40 with a triple camera system, P40 Pro with quad camera system and P40 Pro+ with a five-camera system which has 3x optical zoom camera and 10x optical zoom camera. And of cause it will still be a using a camera system co-developed with LEICA. Pricing & availability is at the end of this post.

Although Huawei is not the first to have a five-camera system on a smartphone, because Nokia 9 PureView had that in 2019. But Huawei is offering a 10x optical zoom via a brand new periscope lens with a RYYB colour filter array that boost light intake for improved quality of zoomed shots. With the addition of 10 digital zooming, this will be Huawei’s first 100x SuperZoom Array which will be exclusive to HUAWEI P40 Pro+.

If you do not require that much zooming, the P40 Pro will still offer 50x SuperSensing Zoom in their quad camera system. Both P40 Pro & P40 Pro+ will also offer 32MP front selfie camera with depth camera for better bokeh shots with your selfies. The P40 will only have 32MP front camera without the depth camera.

The HUAWEI Ultra Vision Sensor included in the full HUAWEI P40 Series is an engineering marvel that revolutionises sensor technology at a pixel level. Measuring 1/1.28 inches diagonally, it supports pixel binning to achieve a pixel size of 2.44μm and Octa PD AutoFocus for high-speed focus at any time of day, while HUAWEI XD Fusion Engine leverages AI to boost detail reproduction across every possible lighting condition.

The 40MP SuperSensing Cine Camera in HUAWEI P40 Pro and HUAWEI P40 Pro+ has an ultra wide-angle lens with a focal length that is equivalent to 18mm and a 1/1.54-inch sensor. Pixels on this sensor can be individually adjusted to capture with long, short or normal exposure for hardware-based HDR videos. Sedecimpixel Fusion Technology is built into this camera to boost light sensitivity to up to ISO51200 and enable 7680 Ultra Slow-Motion video capture.

Other than the differences above, the full line-up will be powered by Kirin 990 5G and supports high-speed 5G and Wi-Fi 6 Plus. The HUAWEI P40 Pro and HUAWEI P40 Pro+ are equipped with the HUAWEI Quad-curve Overflow Display. Inspired by the art of motion in nature, the display takes on a demi bullnose edge on all four sides, creating a shape that is reminiscent of water on the cusp of overflowing from the rim of a cup. The super narrow bezels and streamlined round corners ensure a near borderless look that provides an immersive viewing experience and ergonomic hold, while an improved in-screen fingerprint scanner offers 30 per cent faster biometric authentication.

Available in three glossy glass finishes – Ice White, Deep Sea Blue and Black – and two matte glass colourways – Blush Gold and Silver Frost, the HUAWEI P40 Pro and HUAWEI P40 exude classical elegance from every angle. HUAWEI P40 Pro+ features an exquisite nano-tech ceramic back panel that is kilned and polished to ensure it stands the test of time with incredible durability and timeless style. This unique design comes in two iconic colours: Ceramic White and Ceramic Black.

Price & Availability

In Singapore, the HUAWEI P40 Series will be available in Silver Frost, Blush Gold and Deep Sea Blue – pricing is at S$1,448 and S$1,048 for HUAWEI P40 Pro and HUAWEI P40 respectively. P40 Pro+ will only be available from June 2020, details and price will only be announced closer to launch.
