We came to watch the current number One in women’s singles tennis (WTA). Serena Williams held court in Sofitel So Singapore in Robinson Road with her famed wrist work.
Only this time it was not a tennis racquet she wielded, but an egg whisk. Yes, who knew, right, the powerhouse of women’s tennis with so far a US$60m purse in tournament prize money, could beat an egg?
The statuesque Miss Williams is here for this year’s WTA, and being a self-confessed Francophile – five times champ in Roland Garros the French Open – she chose to show off her culinary skill in Le Club Accor luxury hotels. (In fact she was heard to whisper she preferred the Sofitel So Singapore suite loaned to her for the event, to the official WTA hotel which shall remain nameless.)
Serena’s “kitchen aid” was the hotel’s French chef Anne-Cecile Degenne, (they conversed in French off-camera), and the bake of choice was tarte au pommes, apple pie, and you can’t get more American than that.
Serena Williams is as American as they come, a strapping sporty girl, incredible skin even under all that punishing sun, and if you’re gonna do something, anything, just be darned good at it. She is too. The apple tart was great, she was lovely and friendly and gracious. Love all.
