1 September 2011, Singapore (Press Release) – 126-year old pewter brand Royal Selangor has been commissioned once again to produce the winner’s trophy for the 2011 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix. The trophy is inspired by the Chinese saying “si hai zhi nei, jie xiong di ye” which translates to “Within the four seas all men are brothers”. Bold and unique- the design symbolises the union of the different nationalities that come together to compete in the race.
The trophy features slim panels that represent the different nationalities that congregate in the spirit of fair sportsmanship. The panels, in different lengths, are in several finishes including satin, glossy black and brilliant and arranged sporadically to create a sense of movement akin to the speed of the race. A long triangular panel in glossy, dramatic red finish is added to the structure to represent the main event sponsor, Singtel.
The entire structure is designed to also resemble a high rise building representing the architectural landscape of the city race. Supporting the structure is a matte black finish wood and pewter base. A round pewter base is wrapped with a cross-shaped wood piece to resemble a steering wheel.
The trophy stands at 587mm and will be lifted by the first, second, third place and construction winners of the race. Miniatures of the trophy will also be available at all Royal Selangor stores for F1 lovers to purchase and replicas of the trophy will be placed at the Royal Selangor stores located at Clarke Quay and Marina Bay Sands for Formula 1 lovers to get a closer look.
Commenting on the commission of the trophy, General Manager of Royal Selangor Marketing, Chen Tien Yue said, “ We’re honoured that Singtel has once again entrusted us with the task of designing this year’s trophy. We are also proud that our design team has created a trophy that captures the spirit of the unity at the F1 race.”
Royal Selangor has supplied trophies for many prestigious international sporting events including the 16th Commonwealth Games, World Cup Gold and the F1 Malaysia and Shanghai Grand Prix.
