Serena Williams will be returning to Singapore for the International Premier Tennis League. The world’s no. one will return to represent the Singapore Slammers in the inaugural International Premier Tennis League (IPTL) from 2 to 4 December 2014 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
IPTL will feature past, present and future champions playing in a new ground breaking format which sees four teams view for top honours and a US$1 million price purse.
Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Patrick Rafter, Lleyton Hewitt, Daniela Hantuchova, Bruno Soares, Nick Kyrgios and Tomas Berdych of the Singapore Slammers will go head-to-head against the likes of Caroline Wozniacki, Marin Cilic, Ana Ivanovic, Jo-Wilfred Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Carlos Moya, Eugenie Bouchard and Goran Ivanisevic of the Manila Mavericks, Indian Aces and UAE Royals in the new look tournament.
There will be five single-set matches combining championship tennis with music and entertainment. The team with the most points won across the five sets wins the match. You will be able to experience 20 players competing in one evening.
Coaches will play a more prominent role than in conventional team tennis competitions. They will select the lineup of players to represent the team in each category, strategically calling for timeouts and substitutions based on player performances. There will be more game strategy and team tactics at IPTL offering more entertainment as the coaches and teams vie to outthink each other both on and off court.
Josh Eagle will spearhead the Singapore Slammers. Josh is the current Australian Davis Cup Coach and recipient of the Tennis Australia Elite Coaching Excellence Award. Eagle has won five ATP Doubles titles and reached Mixed Doubles Finals at the 2001 Australian Open.
Other coaches include John Laffnie De Jager who will head the UAE Royals while Fabrice Santoro and Manila native Treat Huey will serve as player-coaches for the Micromax Indian Aces and Manila Mavericks respectively.
Match times for the first match up will be from 4pm to 7pm and the second match-up from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.
