17 December 2012, Singapore – Before the year ends, we checked out some of the photography contests out there for the amateur as well as the professional hobbyist. We picked four interesting photo contests from Ascendas Faces and Places, the 34th Nikon Photo Contest, PARKROYAL at Pickering, and the Sony World Photography Awards. So take your camera out and start snapping!
Ascendas Faces and Places Photo Contest
Business space solutions provider Ascendas is running a Faces and Places photo contest. The novice or the semi-professional photographer categories requires you to capture the essence of any Ascendas building or business park located in Singapore, China, India, the Philippines, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Taiwan and Indonesia.
The top three winners from the Novice Category will be selected based on the number of votes recorded during the contest period. In the Semi-professional category, a panel of judges will pick three winners based on creativity (80%), photogenic quality (15%) and public votes (5%).
Winners from each category will win a 64GB iPad Mini with WiFi and cellular capabilities and the photos will be published in Ascent, Ascendas’ quarterly newsletter which is distributed to more than 10,000 readers. The two runner-ups will receive an iPod Shuffle.

34th Nikon Photo Contest 2012-2013
Entries from the Nikon Photo Contest 2012-2013 are being accepted from 1 December 2012 to 28 February 2013. Previously known as the Nikon Photo Contest International since 1969, the photo contest has seen more than 23,000 photographers from 153 countries submitting more than 60,000 photos for the 2010-2011 competition.
A panel of judges made up of well-known photographers active on the global scene will select 54 works for first, second and third prizes in each category, together with a grand prize for the best entry across Categories A, B and C. A new award, the Participants’ Award for Most Popular Entry, will be chosen by the contest entrants. The judges will be led by photographer Chris Rainier and include Iatã Cannabrava, Stefan Chow, Julia Durkin, Timothy Fadek, Morten Krogvold, Wang Lei, Larry McNeil, Moeketsi Moticoe, Fumio Nanjo, Ryo Ohwada, Raghu Rai, Aysha Remeithi, Marcela Taboada and Ami Vitale.
There will be four categories.
- Category A – Single Photo
- Category B – Composite Photo, featuring composites composed from a series of 2 – 5 photographs
- Category C – Photographic Video, featuring videos up to 45 seconds in length
- Category D – Motion Snapshot, which utilises the “Motion Snapshot” image format used in Nikon 1 cameras that combines still images and movies

PARKROYAL on Pickering Photography Contest
In anticipation of PARKROYAL Group of Hotels’ latest property opening in January 2013, the hotel group lets you participate till 28 Feburary next year in its “Your PARKROYAL on Pickering Photo Connection” contest to depict your connection with the hotel through photography. The hotel is giving away 10 prizes in March next year after 10 photos are selected by a panel of three judges – celebrity and eco-activist Nadya Hutagalung, photographer Justin Ng and Microsoft’s Southeast Asia Photo Editor, Lim Wui Liang who have kick started the contest with their own inspired photographs. Submit up to three photographs and a description of the inspiration in less than 100 words via email at pickeringphoto@parkroyalhotels.com.
The grand prize is a five-day, four night trip for two (flights from Singapore to Shanghai with accommodation in Shanghai) to the upcoming PARKROYAL Serviced Suites Green City, Shanghai which is opening mid 2013 and a three-day, two night weekend getaway at PARKROYAL on Pickering.
There are four runner-up prizes of a three-day, two night weekend getaway at PARKROYAL on Pickering with a S$100 dining voucher at the hotel’s restaurant LIME.
The five consolation prizes are S$100 LIME dining vouchers.

Sony World Photography Awards – Singapore’s First National Award
The Sony World Photography Awards introduces its first Singapore National Award for Singaporean amateur photographers. Submit your best photos into one of the ten Sony World Photography Awards 2013 Open Competition categories before 4 January 2013.
Prizes:
- 1st prize – Picture will be exhibited at the World Photo London in April 2013 and at www.worldphoto.org. Winner will also receive return tickets, accommodation and invitation to attend the Sony World Photography Awards 2013 Gala Ceremony in London on 25 April 2013 and also receive a Sony SLT-A99 camera, lenses and accessories.
- 2nd prize – A Sony SLT-A77 camera, lenses and accessories
- 3rd prize – A Sony SLT-A65 camera, lenses and accessories
