This annual event was created by the World Sleep Society to raise awareness of sleep disorders and the burden that they place on society. It was created to celebrate sleep as well as a call to action on issues related to sleep including medicine, education, social aspects and driving.
We all know that sleep is important and required to keep healthy. The duration of a healthy sleep for adults between 18 and 60 years old duration is seven hours or more each day. There is a correlation of lack of sleep with declining health. Sleeping under seven hours per day is associated with an increased risk of developing chronic conditions including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke and frequent mental distress.
Did you also know that most people have about four cycles of Rapid Eye Movement sleep a night? This sleep stage offers the most vivid and prolonged dreaming.
Dr. Carlos H. Schenck, a sleep and dream researcher and author from the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Centre and the University of Minnesota states, “People should not have to live with poor sleep. Assess your lifestyle and daily habits, including the use and timing of caffeine and alcohol, evening activities and the presence of stress, in order to identify what can be modified to obtain better sleep”.
Did you know that most sleep disorders such as insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnias and circadian dysrhthmias are preventable and treatable. Less than one-third of sufferers seek professional help.
In America, more than a third of adults do not get enough sleep on a regular basis, according to a recent study in the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
The National Sleep Foundation in the US released new sleep times earlier last year. Here is a guide of how much sleep you should be getting based on your age.
- Newborns (0-3 months): Sleep range narrowed to 14-17 hours each day (previously it was 12-18)
- Infants (4-11 months): Sleep range widened two hours to 12-15 hours (previously it was 14-15)
- Toddlers (1-2 years): Sleep range widened by one hour to 11-14 hours (previously it was 12-14)
- Preschoolers (3-5): Sleep range widened by one hour to 10-13 hours (previously it was 11-13)
- School age children (6-13): Sleep range widened by one hour to 9-11 hours (previously it was 10-11)
- Teenagers (14-17): Sleep range widened by one hour to 8-10 hours (previously it was 8.5-9.5)
- Younger adults (18-25): Sleep range is 7-9 hours (new age category)

The irony of it is I haven’t had enough sleep the past week, with an active mind that doesn’t stop working. Dr Kenny Pang, ENT Snoring Specialist of Asia Sleep Centre said, “Getting ample sleep is critical to our everyday performance at work or at play. But it can often be difficult to get effective sleep, especially for travellers who may not be able to find an optimal environment that encourages restful sleep. One way to counteract this is to ensure that you are well-equipped before getting onto a flight. Simple items such as eye masks, a good neck pillow and warm socks or mittens can go a long way in helping to improve the quality of your sleep while you’re 39,000 feet up in the air or halfway across the globe.”
Debby Soo, KAYAK Vice President, APAC said, “A good night’s sleep is at the top of the list for many travellers when choosing a hotel. Whether a holiday is about relaxation or adventure, a rejuvenating sleep is a must.
