Following the success of its other outlet, Tonkotsu King Ramen returns with a second themed restaurant, Tonkotsu King Four Season, at the fringe of the city in Bugis Village (facing Rochor Centre). Chef Keisuke Takeda, whose creations are served in both outlets, was selected as the top ramen chef in Japan in the Ramen Champion Series 2011.
Unique to this outlet is its four season theme which is incorporated in the restaurant’s interior design, bowls motifs and ramen selections. Unlike the outlet at Orchid Hotel which has only 15 seats, Tonkotsu King Four Season at Bugis Village has a total of 54 seats, making it an ideal place for small gatherings with affordable ramen selection starting from S$10.90.
Specialising in Tonkotsu ramen (pork bone broth), the menu presents five ramen variations with four of them representing the four seasons of Japan namely Spring Ramen (basil and cheese), Summer Ramen (spicy pork minced), Autumn Ramen (pork minced with bonito flavour and fried mixed mushroom) and Winter Ramen (pork broth ramen). The King Ramen (stir-fried pork with ginger) rounds up the delectable selection.
The Spring Ramen offers an unusual zesty combination of parmesan cheese and basil leaves served in a thick, milky white broth. For chili lovers, Summer Ramen pleases with its spicy minced pork variation which the chef created to cater to our local palate. Mushroom lovers can look out for the Autumn Ramen which gets a winning vote for its full-flavoured mushroom broth complimented with bonito flavour. Mushrooms aside, the Winter Ramen offers a back-to-basics option with its traditional pork-broth for those who prefer a classic selection. For those looking for an authentic Japanese flavour, try the King Ramen which consists of stir-fried pork and ginger, inspired by a traditional Japanese dish of ginger pork (Shogayaki).
Diners will be offered the crowd-pleasing option to customize their ramen by stating their preferences of toppings, oil amount, noodle texture and intensity of the soup broth on the order form. Each piping hot bowl of ramen can be accompanied with free flow of seasoned bean sprouts and boiled eggs. End the meal with the Tonkotsu King Japanese Green Tea Cola (S$3.80), an unexpected connation of carbonated green tea.
Overall, the ramen broth offers a good balance of full-flavoured tastiness without being overly salty. At its price range, Tonkotsu King Four Seasons offers great value for money. Its ramen comes with generous portions of quality ingredients and its unique creations are in a league of its own.
My top picks for the day will have to be a tie between the Spring and Autumn Ramen, both of which brought out the unique flavours of its ingredients (notably the basil and cheese for the spring and the mushroom for the autumn) without compromising on the signature taste of a good ramen.
Kudos to Chef Keisuke Takeda and his team! Tonkotsu King Four Season at Bugis Village will start operations from this Friday, 10 May 2013.
