Authentic Bak Kut Teh House Party For Busy Folks

Having a last minute house party and you think that a wine & cheese kind of party is too boring? Why not serve up some authentic Singaporean Bak Kut Teh (Pork rib soup) to your guests for a change? Deliveroo is an on-demand food delivery service that we have personally tried and love the convenience and service, before going ahead to organise this Bak Kut Teh (BKT) Party. Because Deliveroo only lists out their partner F&B outlets around & near your designated delivery venue, you will almost always get your food ON-TIME & FRESH!!!

Hence I decided to only order my party food for 12 people, just 1.5 hours before dinner! This will be the ultimate test for such services. I as that confident to putting my guests’ dinner AT RISK!

Here’s my timelog with Deliveroo:

 

4:30PM, Sunday

Two hours before dinner I print-screened the Deliveroo menu for Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh on my smartphone and sent them out to my guests on Whatapp to ask them what they would like to have for the night. Saves me the trouble of knowing what my guests like or dislike and what to prepare. Just take order, consolidate and send. It’s that easy.

And of course vegan guests will not be invited to a Bak Kut Teh party.

 

5:02PM, Sunday

Since I have 12 people dining in and a bill of S$251.91, I assumed that my huge order will take a longer time to prepare and it might not be delivered within the usual delivery time of 35 minutes. My hunch was right! The app managed to calculate and gave me an estimated deliver time of 71 minutes. This is called PLANNING AHEAD.

 

5:46PM, Sunday

Checked the Deliveroo app again and it indicated that the Deliveroo rider was already at Rong Cheng Bak Kut Teh store at Sin Ming Avenue, collecting the food. Hence it was time for me to prepare to serve my guests.

For the fun of making the BKT party more authentic, I actually bought these old school rooster bowls, orange chopsticks and spoons to achieve a truly kopitiam style.

 

6:15PM, Sunday

Based on the estimated time, the food was supposed to arrive at 6:14pm. At 6:15pm, I got a call from Deliveroo that my order was on the way and it would arrive in 15 minutes due to our large order. That was very responsive!

Even though they were late, it was still alright. Because I had real-time tracking of the delivery through the app that gives me peace of mind and I planned ahead, dinner was scheduled for 6.30pm. My guests were still happily chatting without knowing that the delivery was late.

 

6:27PM, Sunday

Three minutes before my proposed dinner (still on-time), the doorbell rang. Knowing that this was a Deliveroo Party, my guests all got excited and rushed to the door to receive the delivery (aka Instagram & Facebook moment).

So because the order was large, we actually got two Deliveroo riders sending our delivery. They were so sweet to oblige to our photo taking and posing requests. The food was all well packed and still hot, without any spillage in the bags. So it was time to unpack and serve it up for the party!

 

6:31 PM, Sunday

Within five minutes after our delivery have been dropped off, my phone rang. Deliveroo called me to apologise for the delayed delivery. They offered a S$15 discount for my next order with them. Talk about efficiency!! I did not even make a report and I was actually okay with the delay as it was all planned out. This only meant DELIVEROO for DESSERTS for the party!!!

 

7:22PM, Sunday

After all the guests commented that they had a great Bak Kut Teh meal, it was too soon to end the party like this. So we all agreed on having Blackball Glass Jelly Shaved Ice for dessert. This will be tough test for Deliveroo, as shaved ice will start melting once it is served.

 

7:49PM, Sunday

When I made the order for Blackball, it estimated a delivery time of 40 minutes. But our order managed to come 13 minutes ahead of schedule. We still have shaved ice in our bowl when delivered and everyone still enjoy a hearty serving of this Taiwanese desserts during this hot & humid season. Though some of us complained we had too much food for just one night.
