Summer celebrations always mean one thing. Barbecue! While the unrelenting heat has made it impossible to do so ourselves, Spice Brasserie of PARKROYAL Kitchener Road is here to satisfy our cravings. From now till 12 September 2015, expect intense, beautiful flavours of Bali to be served up right in the comfort of this conveniently located hotel (next to Farrer Road MRT).
The foundation of Balinese cuisine is their myriad use of spices, from their eight-spice combination (peppers, cumin, nutmeg, candle nut, etc.), galangal, fish paste and more. It is a complex mix of its indigenous traditions, Indonesian, Chinese and Indian influences – a.k.a. a delight to our palettes. So, imagine all that combined with a plethora of fresh, succulent seafood such as squid, lobster, clams and lalas.
Highlights include the Grilled Lobster in Coconut, Cumi Cumi Lsi (Stuffed Squid), Ikan Bakar and Crab Bakar. Grilled to point, and soaked up in all the smoky and impactful Balinese flavours. You need nothing more, besides, perhaps, a shot of Brem (Bali rice wine) for that shiok factor.
Seafood aside, the ones I kept going back for were the grilled meats. It is not every day you get to have Babi Guling (suckling pig) with a side of jackfruit chutney in Singapore. As it is traditionally roasted right at the open kitchen, it also makes for a photo-worthy moment. There is also the Ayam Betutu (grilled kampong chicken), which I recommend hanging around for a fresh off-the-grill batch to come round.
While waiting, there will an enticing array of Herbs and Spices-themed dishes. Not only can you make your own Gado Gado with different types of sauces for your choosing, but also feast on Braised Pork Intestines, Bebek Bengil (Indonesian Grilled Duck), Sambal Petai Goreng and more. The usual Japanese Sushi Bar and their signature Teochew Porridge counter will also be available, alongside fresh Naans in the Indian cuisine corner.
Besides their range of deserts, including Muah Chee and Durian Pengat, there is no sweeter way to end a meal than with a sweet deal. The Balinese BBQ and Seafood Buffet is available at a SG50 promotional price of S$78 for two adults and/or S$25/child (<12 years old) from Thursdays to Saturday, while the Herbs and Spices Buffet is available at S$50 for two adults and/or S$16/child for lunch (daily) and dinner (Sunday to Wednesday).
