Mid Autumn 2024 - Mooncakes

Mid-Autumn 2024: The Ultimate Showdown of Unique Mooncake Packaging and Flavours

This year, the Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Mooncake Festival, will be celebrated on 17 September 2024. In the lead-up to the festivities, we’ve had the opportunity to sample a variety of mooncakes, and we’ve selected some of the standout offerings in terms of both packaging and unique flavours.

Each year, Mid-Autumn gift packaging becomes more elaborate, with businesses striving to impress their clients with corporate gifting. As a result, the prices of these gifts have also soared. You may have seen many more different designs and packaging at the Tangs Mid-Autumn fairs at Vivocity, Parkway Parade Basement Atrium and NEX (till 17 September 2024).

It’s understandable when you receive one or two, and the packaging is designed to be reused—like jewellery cases from Four Seasons Singapore, a wine holder from Hilton Singapore Orchard that’s perfect for dining out, or a convenient vanity pouch from The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore.

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore once again impresses with their packaging this year. Their ‘His’ and ‘Hers’ mooncake vanity pouches are crafted from saffiano leather and feature velvet interiors, complete with two pockets and a zip compartment. Available in two colors—red for traditional baked mooncakes and beige for snow skin mooncakes—these pouches are both elegant and functional.

For those who do not fancy the traditional baked or snow skin mooncakes, they can still indulge in the Mid-Autumn festivities. Janice Wong’s chocolates offer a delightful collection of chocolate mooncakes in flavours of Peanut Gingerflower, Gula Lapis Whisky Old Fashioned, Vanilla Biscoff and Salted Caramel Cashew. The packaging, in stunning shades of blue and red, is not only beautiful but also sturdy enough to be repurposed for storage once the chocolates are eaten.

In a mindful move to reduce waste, The Westin Singapore has introduced a food-grade, biodegradable lacquered bamboo mooncake box, complete with a rubber bellyband, which can be reused as a lunchbox. One standout flavour this year is the Mixed Nuts with Nasi Lemak Sambal. We were pleasantly surprised by how well this mooncake turned out—definitely in a good way!

Our second Instagram Reel of unique Mid-Autumn packaging features a choo choo train from Ralph’s Coffee, PARKROYAL COLLECTION at Marina Bay, Crowne Plaza Changi Airport, Pan Pacific Singapore, Starbucks, Sheraton Towers Singapore, Tunglok, Shangri-La Singapore, Fairmont Singapore, and Andaz Singapore.

The mooncake packaging from Sheraton Towers and PARKROYAL COLLECTION MARINA BAY includes lanterns that can be hung as decorative displays. The lantern from PARKROYAL COLLECTION MARINA BAY is battery-operated and lights up when switched on.

Swensen’s has crafted a truly unique mooncake this year, shaped like a moon with a gooey, chewy chocolate ice cream centre and a salted egg bonbon core, all encased in a golden chocolate shell. Goodwood Park Hotel’s Snowskin Kamquat Melon mooncake with macadamia crust offers a delightful mix of textures and flavors, perfectly balanced without being overly sweet. Raffles Hotel’s snow-skin truffle mooncakes are renowned for their distinctive flavours, and this year’s Gin and Rum-infused varieties are impressive, though we particularly enjoyed the Baijiu with Black Sesame. Hilton Singapore Orchard‘s Hok Kar Sai mooncake features stretchy mochi, adding an unusual yet delightful dimension to the traditional treat.
