Tiffany blue and bunny ear chairs, Dazzling Cafe Mint has garnered crowds thanks to its Alice in Wonderland-esque decor and extravagant honey toasts. Not resting on its laurels, it refreshes its savoury menu with local-inspired appetisers, hearty mains and a new vegetarian option that will get even the most carnivorous clamouring for more.
Appetisers
We all love our prawn paste chicken (har cheong gai). This tze char favourite has gotten a lot of attention of late, with more modern interpretations, bringing them from kopitiams into fancy restaurants. Dazzling Cafe jumps onto the bandwagon with a sweet and sour plum sauce that has me wishing there was a bottle to take home. And, it is only available as winglets a.k.a. no messy fumbling with oily fingers!
Looking almost too pretty to eat is their Mozzarella and Cucumber Granita Salad. It makes for a great start to the meal, or if you’re going straight for the honey toasts after. The salad balances between sweet and savoury thanks to the beet root jellies and the crumbles of dehydrated olives and balsamic reduction dressing.
Pasta
Nothing made me happier than seeing that the Thai Tom Yum Seafood (huge, huge mussels) pasta was still on the menu. Only difference? They changed the pasta to Rigatoni. Not only do the pastas hold on to the spicy yet sour sauce that I love so much, but it also makes it easier to eat. So boys and girls, you don’t have to worry about being in the splash zone when devouring this saucy dish! (Pun intended)
Then, there’s the one vegetarian dish that even the carnivorous me can’t get enough of. If you have not had Fregola Sarde before, then lucky you, you get to try it at Dazzling Cafe Mint. It is chewy, nutty and comes with a side of healthy. Made from semolina, it satisfies your carb cravings without the calorie overload. It contains resistant starch, a type of dietary fibre that helps to maintain blood and sugar levels while improving digestion.
Sounds good? Now imagine that drenched in gooey cheese.
Risotto
Another crowd pleaser will be the Scallop Risotto, packed full of umami flavour thanks to the prawn miso broth. This Japanese-inspired dish is served with a hearty serving of Parmesan cheese, peas and smoked paprika powder for the extra kick.
Mains
And, we have our proteins. Dazzling Cafe Mint takes on the classic Cordon Bleu in their newest addition. The mashed chicken is wrapped in Parma Ham, instead of the other way around. This allowed the star of the show – the chicken – to soak up all of the ham’s sweet yet salty flavour, all while keeping it succulent.
Another seemingly simple dish is the Butter Poached Salmon. It served in this peculiar shape for a reason. The salmon has been rolled up like Japanese Char Siew (think ramen) and sliced to maintain its juices. And, indeed, it has. It is paired nicely with a sweet carrot puree and squid ink couscous for texture.
Last but not least is this photo-worthy Potato Doughnut. Served with a soft boiled egg, wobbling in glory, at the top, it conceals a bratwurst sausage dressed in caramalised apple sauce. Think bangers and mash, reinvented.
Of course, a trip to Dazzling Cafe can’t be complete without one of their honey toasts. If you love coconut ice cream, their exclusive Mango and Coconut Gelato Honey Toast is still on the menu, alongside the ever-popular Matcha.
