Her mother dated Steve Macqueen and Marlon Brando (yes, Taylor, the R-Patz of your grandma’s generation) and her father dated Grace Kelly. She herself has gone out with Lance Armstrong – likely in a Rolls rather than on a Raleigh – and last Thursday evening Tory Burch made it to Singapore to clink cocktails with her customers. Burch is the American fashion designer of the noughties.
With an CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America) award for her accessories line, Tory Burch opened here in Wisma Atria last year and her look is boho-prep, or preppy-boho, what you see on the popular TV series Gossip Girl. Fans of the show too are fans of Tory Burch, who has appeared as herself in an episode or two.
Pretty much influenced and inspired by her own upbringing, a preppie from Penn U (University of Pennsylvania) whose alum includes another well-dressed grad Candice Bergen. So it was that the Tory Burch boutique in Wisma Atria (facing Orchard Road) was packed to the hilt, make that gilt, as a clutch of our socialites assembled to meet the American socialite and billionaire philanthropist.
Burch, 47, supports the economic empowerment of women. And has been endorsed by the Big O (Ms Winfrey). Many of the guests – invited to shop and sip champagne and nibble on delectable delights – were obviously economically empowered to buy a Burch. Because there were so many, I could make out only the tall poppies. Andrea D’Cruz, Caroline Heah, Olga Iserlis, Elena Iwatake (and her mum Gertie), Kelly Sia, Fann Wong, between the models, and of course Tory herself, an unassuming and unflappable presence.
What a great evening to start your weekend on. Everyone went home with a Tory Burch packaging: Door gift an exquisite leather ‘n’ gold studs bracelet. A vicToryrious event then!
