The World of Studio Ghibli Exhibition at ArtScience Museum

Don’t Miss The World of Studio Ghibli Exhibition at ArtScience Museum till 2 February 2025

Studio Ghibli’s relatable characters have been captivating audiences all over the world for close to four decades. The studio’s timeless treasures have arrived in Singapore through The World of Studio Ghibli exhibition at the ArtScience Museum. Visitors can join iconic characters on an unforgettable journey through the realms of films including My Neighbour Totoro (1988), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989) and Spirited Away (2000). The exhibition will run until 2 February 2025 and tickets start from S$20.50.

11 galleries spanning two levels have been transformed for one of the museum’s largest exhibitions to be shown. Visitors can expect 16 large-scale, immersive theatrical sets that depict iconic scenes from 11 Studio Ghibli films. Each reflects the same attention to craftsmanship and narrative depth that permeates the Studio’s films.

“The World of Studio Ghibli at ArtScience Museum is a homage to one of the greatest animation studios of our time. This exhibition is a cultural milestone for Singapore, offering our visitors a deeply engaging experience and an exclusive view of artworks never-before-seen in Singapore. What makes this exhibition particularly remarkable is the presence of original artworks and installations crafted on-site by a specialised team of builders from Japan who were selected by Studio Ghibli. The sculptures and theatrical sets in the show authentically showcase the Ghibli universe, bringing to life the rich, textured worlds of the Studio’s films. With many of its films also featuring humanist and ecological themes which align with ArtScience Museum’s own vision to explore the intersection of art, science, and technology while fostering a deeper understanding of nature and our place within it, we felt that this exhibition would resonate powerfully with our visitors. As such, we have been striving to bring a Studio Ghibli exhibition to our shores for many years,”

Honor Harger, Vice President of ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands.

Upon entering the ArtScience Museum, visitors are greeted by a giant sculpture from Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2008) in the museum’s lily pond. In the Basement 2 galleries, stunning immersive installations bring scenes to life from Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), Castle in the Sky (1986), and My Neighbour Totoro (1988). On Level 3, more original sculptures and theatrical sets showcase iconic moments from Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Porco Rosso (1992), Pom Poko (1994), Princess Mononoke (1997), Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989), Spirited Away (2001), and The Boy and the Heron (2023).

There are also 16 box art installations that offer small portals into various frames from the movies so visitors can take a closer look at intricate details from these films. These original works of art are produced specially for the exhibition.

The exhibition offers countless photo opportunities, so be sure to keep an eye out and get ready to strike your best pose. With so many visually stunning displays, you could easily spend hours exploring every corner and capturing memorable moments. Whether you’re posing with iconic props or immersing yourself in the vibrant settings, there’s no shortage of Instagram-worthy shots to enjoy!

Bring home special keep sakes from Studio Ghibli from three special in-gallery activity spaces.
Engage in activities ranging from drawing soot sprites featured in Spirited Away (2001), writing heartwarming notes of gratitude inspired by Totoro, and making their own animation device called a thaumatrope with characters from My Neighbour Totoro (1988).

The World of Studio Ghibli exhibition, first launched in Japan in 2013 and later showcased in South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Bangkok, has been redeveloped for its ArtScience Museum iteration. This version includes many new, never-before-seen additions, such as large-scale graphics of movie frames and props brought to life for the first time. Visitors can explore the studio’s intricate world-building, uncover hidden details from the films, and even spot fun easter eggs like local delicacies among No Face’s food spread.

Founded in 1985 by directors Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli has produced 25 feature films, many of which became top box office hits in Japan. Spirited Away (2001), Howl’s Moving Castle (2004), and Princess Mononoke (1997) are among Japan’s top 10 grossing films. The studio has earned global acclaim and numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Spirited Away. Studio Ghibli also received four consecutive Academy Award nominations for films like The Wind Rises (2013) and The Red Turtle (2016). In 2022, Ghibli Park opened in Aichi, Japan, and their latest film, The Boy and the Heron (2023), won multiple prestigious awards.

There is a retail store on Level 3 that offers a wide variety of official merchandise from The World of Studio Ghibli.
