If you’re of a certain age, you’ll recall The Addams Family television sitcom – spooky, kooky, family fun.
If you’re old enough to remember The New Yorker magazine cartoons on which the TV show is based, OMG but you’re OLD.
The new musical comedy version staged at Resorts World Sentosa’s Festive Grand last month is the 2010 edition Broadway production.
It was almost a laugh a minute graveyard humour – nicely spliced with topical jokes, including an honourable mention to our Merlion, a ghoul by itself if ever I saw one.
Coming in at just under 20 songs & dances across two hours, it was enough to wake the dead. (In fact they did. Ancestors got in on the act.)
In the main, it’s about what is normal. A nuclear family of father, mother, daughter, son, uncle, grandmother, and butler. (Yes, aka domestic helper.)
So, they dress funny, gothic even (you haven’t been out much lately?). They play at torture, and keep a pet squid. (Torture a pet squid could well be a game app to play in the train.)
Daughter Wednesday falls in love with Lucas (the new normal). Rather like your neighbour, probably got tuition class etc.
Do I need to spell out the rest of the story?
They all co-exist happily ever after, after coupla show-stopping tunes and endless jokes, and we learn not to treat future in-laws as outlaws.
