Singaporean Takes the World Record for SMS Texting

Jeffrey Teo Yi Hao with SingTel DirectorBrand Development Ms Cheryl Wang

22 September 2011, Singapore – 25 year old web programmer, Jeffrey Teo Yi Hao clocked a speed of 23.40 seconds – more than two seconds faster than the current world record of 25.94 seconds set by Melissa Thompson in London, UK last year.

Jeffrey was the fastest among four finalists at the SMS competition held at Tampines Mall last Sunday, as part of the series of SingTel “Fast Is Amazing” roadshows held in conjunction with the 2011 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.

Jeffrey borrowed a touchscreen phone from his father two weeks ago and only started practising then.  He was also one of the finalists in the 2008 SingTel SMS Shoot out and was narrowly beaten by Jeramy Sng Gim who achieved the world record.

The Guinness World Records has been accepting SMS records and the message it provided for the time test was “The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.”   This message has to be accurately typed for the attempt to be recognised.

According to Mr. Ong Eng Huat, Singapore Book of Records’ President, there is no other sport that Singapore has been so consistently best in the world and it is the only sport which Singapore has broken the world record for the fourth time.
