The Fear Explorers are back to haunt down Halloween Horror Nights 6 (HHN6) at Universal Studios Singapore. This year the team returns to provide you with reviews based on different fear benchmarks by four individuals – The Brave, The WHY AM I HERE, The Cam Whore and The Babe.

Other than the usual scares & screaming, this year’s Halloween Horror Nights is a horrific & beautiful affair with malevolent Lady Death as the terror host for the annual USS event. Every day, the event will begin with an EDM opening by a guest DJ who you will eventually hate because his opening was just too long and all fright-fest fans cannot wait for his gig to stop and head on to the haunted houses. So it is okay to be late for HHN6 to completely miss the opening act.
So just for your info, during my five hours walk in the park for HHN6, I managed to walk 4.6km and burned 2,108cal. So it is a good workout in my opinion and I almost hatched a 5km egg on Pokemon Go. 🙂
For the review below, RED Rating is the scare factor for that particular zone rated by that individual followed by their opinion on the trail.
Salem Witch House (Haunted House)
Tremble at the centuries-old wrath of the vengeful DeFeo Witches, awakened by modern-day witchcraft enthusiasts practising rituals in the Salem Witch House. With evil lurking from every corner of the house, you should watch your back!
BABE: 2/5 The scare factor was lacking in this, but you have to give it to the HHN team for all the work. It was like waking up to a dark fairy tale, filled with all the mystery, wonder, and, of course, horror.
CAM: 2.5/5 This is an eerie but yet enchanted haunted house with a few surprises up its sleeves. Definitely Instagram-worthy on many levels. If there’s a haunted house you wanna take a selfie in, this is definitely the one
WHY: 3/5 Walking into a creepy forest and going through layers of plastic bags, then demons and witches popping out from every corner… EEEK!
BRAVE: 1.5/5 Nothing much to be scared about. No booby traps or anything out of the ordinary that scares me.
Old Changi Hospital (Haunted House)
The infamous Old Changi Hospital sends chills down the spines as it is one of the most haunted places in the world. You will chance upon vengeful ghosts from patients who do not know they are dead to the Pontianak, a Japanese soldier who wanders the hallways.
BABE: 4/5 You’re not Singaporean if your childhood was not filled with stories of OCH’s hauntings. While I was spared from walking into the real one as part of orientation (why would anyone do that!?), this was horrifying enough to last a life time!
CAM: 3.5/5 If i were blind folded and brought to this haunted house, I will think that I am really in Old Changi Hospital. USS’s team managed to replicate our childhood fears with immersive details.
WHY: 4.5/5 If you are really terrified… DON’T NOT GO NEAR ANY BEDS!!! PERIOD. Don’t say I never warn you.
BRAVE: 3.5/5 As long as you know the ghostly rumours of OCH, you will be buried in the eerie atmosphere this haunted house had staged. The random walking Japanese soldier is a great addition to the whole theme.
Hawker Centre Massacre (Haunted House)
Mayhem breaks loose at the Hawker Centre Massacre where a meal turns into a banquet of horror as victims of radioactive food poisoning transform into savage, flesh-eating creatures. Be warned! That sugar cane uncle may serve you more than what you asked for.
BABE: 3/5 Last year’s apocalyptic madness spilled over into this year’s hawker massacre. Kudos to the whole set up, the actors, random stores and even the toilet was so revolting, I just wanted to get out. In fact, I actually got scared on the way out! An unsuspecting last scare awaited me when I thought I saw the end of the tunnel. That was pretty good placement. Applaud!
CAM: 1.5/5 I just don’t buy the idea of chemical spilled themed haunted houses or scare zones. Because I will go in with the mind set of “these are a bunch of helpless human beings” and that will take away all the fear I have in that zone. But pretty good setup for the haunted house.
WHY: 3/5 This haunted house offers more than just visual horror, it even incorporated a sticky vomit-like smell that will get you into the theme the moment you step in.
BRAVE: 1/5 To me this is like walking into a rundown hawker centre. That’s all.
Bodies of Work (Haunted House)
Artist Damien Shipman will take fans on a heinous trip down memory lane as he unveils his controversial exhibition titled Bodies of Work. Displayed in a macabre fashion, his twisted memories are played out in this horrific homage to his family who perished tragically in a fire.
BABE: 5/5 I lost my sanity here. Think outlast meet M. Night Shyamalan’s IT. It was more than the jump scares here, the memories of the horror game became reality for me there.
CAM: 4.5/5 At this house you will need to keep your eyes wide open to appreciate the details on every scare actors’ makeup, every details on the props and every details on the wall. Bodies of Work is a work of ART… a work of ART!!!
WHY: 5/5 Blood, organs and fleshes EVERYWHERE… Gory is super not my cup of tea.
BRAVE: 4.5/5 Stunning makeup, costumes and prop setup come together to make Bodies of Work the best haunted house for HHN6.
Hu Li’s Inn (Haunted House)
Those dying for more scares and screams can step inside Hu Li’s Inn, set in colourful Old Shanghai where demonic shape shifters will claim souls by deadly seduction. This is the new hangout for the prettiest demons from Chinese history gathers. So girls… please watch out for your boyfriends.
BABE: 4/5 Aesthetic & effects were beyond what I expected. It reminded me of the Chinese serials on myths I watched as a kid, and I loved seeing them come to live!
CAM: 4/5 Okay BOYS… this zone has the prettiest scare actress… so this is a zone to be wary when couples enter. Because you may come out being SINGLE! I love the pretty costumes in this haunted house.
WHY: 3/5 Mild scares but a gorgeous haunted house with “lovely” singers.
BRAVE: 2/5 Too many cliche, nothing out of the norm kind of scares. Just enjoy taking a walk and enjoy the company of the pretty ladies.
Suicide Forest (Scare Zone)
Those looking for a skin-crawling experience can enter the forbidden grounds of Suicide Forest, one of the scare zones filled with desperate cries and a sinister presence that lures unsuspecting victims to their deaths.
BABE: 2/5 Based on Aokigahara also commonly known as Suicide Forest at the base of Mount Fuji, I expected a more eerie feel, but what I got was a mishmash of local and monsters. Kudos to the decor, but was off topic.
CAM: 1/5 I am too engrossed in the stage setup of this zone as I love the trees with ghosts, charms and dead bodies hanging down the bunches. Hence I did not have anytime to be scared by anything. TOTALLY DISTRACTED!
WHY: 3.5/5 Look up… look down… left then right… horrors everywhere… body parts… just don’t step on a scare actor like me. He was pissed from how loud he screamed.
BRAVE: 3.5/5 Probably it was a media preview, not enough smoke were deployed at the scene. I bet when the event starts on Thursday, with the crowd and smoke, this zone scare the hell out of most visitors.
March of the Dead (Scare Zone)
This is the first-ever carnival procession in a zone lined with deadly descendants, exhumed coffins and larger-than-life skeletons, all led by the ominous Lady Death. The procession culminates in an action-packed live show that celebrates the deceased in the haunting March of the Dead. The parade will be going around the whole park, but the best spot to catch them will be at New York Street where the full cast will be stopping for photo op.
BABE: 1/5 Absolutely beautiful, and the actress acting as the skull lady stood atop her throne like a true queen.
CAM: 0/5 This is the zone where you will be on trigger happy mode and snap away as the makeup on scare actors are simply beautiful and colourful. You won’t even remember you are in a scare zone. Remember to stick around for the parade!
WHY: 1/5 I thought I was at a cosplay party more than a halloween fright fest. Definitely need to take some pictures and share it on Facebook. Absolutely beautiful.
BRAVE: 0/5 This zone will be a walk in the park for the majority. The scare actors in this zone are only around to look good and always ready for selfies. They even came equipped with LED lights shining on their face for the best portrait shots in this dark dark zone
Jack’s Recurring Nightmare Circus (Show)
Back by popular demand, Jack the Clown will steal the show once again in Jack’s Recurring Nightmare Circus at Pantages Hollywood Theatre. Together with his deranged disciples, he will hunt for killer acts from a live casting call featuring world-class aerialists, acrobats, contortionists and other freaky friends.
The Fear Explorers did not get to review this show as it was not ready for stage on media preview night. But we heard that it will be a similar performance to the one in 2014, with a few tweaks and changes to the line up. If they managed to maintain the standard of the performance, then Jack’s Recurring Nightmare Circus should not be missed. See our 2014 quote on the show:
“Some of the acrobats and stunts are Cirque Du Soleil quality acts, that will make you hold your breathe. I guess that is how USS is trying to show that they want to be the leader in Singapore’s Halloween fright fest.”
