As part of Singapore Art Week 2025, Funan has launched Creative Intersections – SNAKES and LADDERS to herald the Lunar New Year festivities, showcasing an exhibition by 13 brands and 15 Singaporean Artists from various disciplines. The creative direction is to manifest the attributes of the Snake zodiac sign—creativity, insightfulness, and transformation—into diverse forms of art, workshops, and merchandise.
This fifth iteration of Funan’s signature Creative Intersections campaign lets visitors feast their eyes on some 23 exhibits curated by Vertical Submarine and various mall exhibits.
This interactive puzzle located at the Level 1 Grand Stairs by Vertical Submarine invites visitors to explore the ups and downs of life through play. The campaign key visual is by artist, author and educator, Wendy Mack. Inspired by the classic board game and the reflective themes of the poem Snakes and Ladders, this installation is designed as an engaging activity for all ages. Visitors are challenged to solve a whimsical children’s poem by guessing the missing letters. Scan the QR code to access an online form to input your guesses for the missing letters on each standee. The first 25 shoppers to guess correctly each week from 17 January to 16 February 2025 will win S$10 eCapitaVouchers in the CapitaStar app.
The 15m-long Fortune Snake art installation by Tang Yiqi, made from customised red fortune packets, is displayed at Funan alongside another installation featuring the lucky number ‘8’ at Level 1 Atrium. These festive installations are available for viewing until 26 January 2025.
Funan features six PASSION snakes, each representing one of its six passions: Chic, Craft, Fit, Play, Taste, and Tech, and they are strategically placed throughout the mall. Chic and Craft can be found at the B2 entrance of the Underground Pedestrian Link. Fit and Play are situated on Level 1, near the Kinetic Wall, while Taste and Tech are located on B2 along the Exhibition Stretch, right in front of Rotiboy at #B2-32.
Keep an eye out for Funan’s Kinetic Wall animation, a groundbreaking seven-storey digital art installation measuring 13 metres tall and 9 metres wide. Made from 1,271 motorised light blades and embossed aluminium panels, it is further enhanced by mirrored ceilings for an impressive visual effect. Situated at the junction of Coleman Street and North Bridge Road, this captivating display comes to life every 10 minutes from 10 am to 10 pm.
This artwork by Umami Labo, an indie multidisciplinary studio founded by a passionate visual artist and creative with expertise in art direction and visual marketing, draws inspiration from the enduring presence of snakes in popular culture, weaving iconic references from the serpent in Eden to Nokia’s Snake game. Its pixelated design symbolises the digital age, where simplicity masks deeper narratives, mirroring the snake’s duality of temptation and allure. Blending ancient archetypes with modern technology, the piece critiques the evolving media landscape and invites reflection on how timeless symbols resonate in today’s screen-dominated world.
There is also a roster of brand and artist collaborations around Funan at Location 03-K10, 02-K10 or 03-17.
