Explore Singapore With The Heritage Hop-About

19 November 2011, Singapore – How familiar are you with the heritage of Singapore? Who says there isn’t much to do in Singapore?

Well at least that was what Singapore TV celebrities Mark Lee and Suhaimi Yusof asked last week at the media preview of the Explore Singapore! 2011 Heritage Hop-About. Mark and Suhaimi are ambassadors of the National Heritage Board (NHB).

From 21 November to 4 December, there are 20 activities held at 44 venues which include the NHB museums, Museum Roundtable members, heritage institutions and National Monuments.

These activities are great for locals as well as visitors from overseas who are seeking to understand the local heritage and history.

National Heritage Board recommends 6 Heritage Hops to look out for :

  1. Monument Open House – 27 National Monuments with free tours conducted by guides from the Preservation of Monuments Board as well as some of the monument owners.  Privately-owned monuments such as the House of Tan Yeok Nee (Former Salvation Army Headquarters) and the Chesed El-Synagogue are amongst some of the 27 monuments.  Mark and Suhaimi will personally conduct a special tour of the monuments along Telok Ayer Street. You have the option of taking the free walking tours or the PMB Shuttle Bus.   Pre registration by 23 November is required at monument@createandconcept.com.sg or call 63822235.  There is a limitation of 20 participants per tour.
  2. SYONAN-TO, 1942 – A first, you’ll be guided through an immersive night tour of Fort Siloso. Get a glimpse into the trials and deprivations of World War II conditions.
  3. Clans of Chinatown – Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority Singapore City Gallery, get an overview of some of the oldest clan associations in Singapore.
  4. It’s A Great, Great Weekend at ACM! – Join Mark and Suhaimi at the Asian Civilisations Museum for a screening of “It’s A Great Great World”
