Eco Music Challenge 2013 winners announced

Musicians Charles Basa, 23, Nur Ashriqin, 21, and Samuel Simpson, 25, have emerged as the winning team in the Eco Music Challenge 2013, beating 11 other finalists in the Grand Finale.

The winning song, ‘Mother Nature’s Cry’, shares the possibility of a better tomorrow and a more beautiful environment if we do our part to preserve the environment. A delightful arrangement of rap from Charles Basa and Samuel Simpson and the powerhouse vocals of Nur Ashriqin, this song will be the official theme song for Clean and Green Singapore (CGS) 2014. A music video depicting the aspiration for a Clean and Green Singapore will be launched on 26 October at the CGS 2014 launch carnival.

Eco Music Challenge 2013 sees a line-up of 12 finalists who performed original compositions with the aim of inspiring environment conservation. Held at Marina Barrage on Saturday, the Eco Music Challenge is a national songwriting competition that encourages music talents of all ages to submit original music compositions. The 12 finalists had put up an impressive performance that varied with music elements of rap, pop, a cappella, rock, soul and more. A total of 11 English and 1 Mandarin composition were performed.

Twelve finalists were shortlisted from 163 submissions and the finalists attended two weeks of mentorship with new mentors including well-known vocal coach John Lee, renowned composer Dick Lee, veteran songwriter Clement Chow, popular local performer Jack Ho, singer-songwriter Shimona Kee and Timbre co-founder Danny Loong.

Winners were chosen by 10% public vote, 10% on-site voting and 80% judge’s vote. The judging panels included industry veterans Danny Loong, Clement Chow, Sueanne Mocktar, Shimona Kee and Jack from local singing duo Jack and Rai who stood in for Jack Ho.

  • 2nd Prize: ‘Make This Dream Alive’ by Ariane Goh & Tzire
  • 3rd Prize: ‘Lady Earth’ by Christiane Mikaela
  • Young Musician Award: ‘Make It Beautiful’ by Niki Kau and Rachael Yow
  • Most Popular Song: ‘Why Don’t We?’ by Yi Yang Chan
  • Special Mention Award: ‘Nature In You’ by S. Gunasegaran and Pichinikkadu Elango
