Andrew Warhola, 6 August 1928 – 22 February 1987, is better known as Andy Warhol. An American painter, printmaker, and filmmaker, Andy was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop Art and was renowned for using mass production of popular culture such as advertising, comic books and brand products as the basis of his art.
You will get to journey through four different stages of Andy Warhol’s life:
Early Years (1940s to 1950s)
His drawings as a child, his first artwork as a commercial artist and the blotted line technique he created are featured here.
The Factory Years (1960s)
The 1960s is when Andy transitioned from commercial art to business art where he created Campell’s Soup Can and celebrity portraits of Liz Taylor and Marilyn Monroe. Films will also be presented in this gallery.
A recreation of Andy’s foil covered Silver Factory studio in the 1960s in New York will provide you with an interactive experience. You can dress up in costumes and be a “star for 15 minutes” in a photo booth to capture the experience. A reproduction of the couch from the Silver Factory is available for you to enjoy the films and the whimsical Silver Clouds piece made of floating helium balloons.
Exposures (1970s)
Warhol used more Polaroids in this decade when photographing celebrities came to prominence. He focused on commissioned portraits to fund his interest in experimental film. His focus shifted to advertisements and silverpoint photographs. It is also during this time he created time capsules which contained meaningful items collected from various periods of his life. You would be able to see 50 magazines and books of over 600 time capsules.
The Last Supper (1980s)
He ventured into television media with Andy Warhol’s T.V. And Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes which you can watch at the exhibition. The exhibition concludes The Last Supper and Self Portrait, two iconic masterpieces he created at the end of his life.
A kids section has been created to cater to young art enthusiasts. This is based on a similar exhibition Andy did in 1983 at Bruno Bischofberger gallery in Switzerland. Here you can view at from a child’s perspective where toy paintings will be displayed at a lower eye level.
This exhibition is part of the Asian tour that will travel to five cities over 27 months starting in Singapore before moving on to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Tokyo in 2014.
