Star Wars Day was just over, but that does not mean the celebrations have to stop! Then again, the celebration never really stops for the hard core fans, am I right?
Well, here comes the good news! LEGOLAND Malaysia will be extending the festivities with their LEGO Star Wars Month – perfect for fans and their families, especially the little ones, to indulge in their love for this epic franchise! The park will be jam-packed full of Star Wars themed activities; from building LEGO Star Wars Microfighters, putting together a mosaic mural, photoshoots at the special LEGO Star Wars photo wall to a re-purposed LEGO Mindstorm Centre where LEGO Star Wars movies will be playing alongside themed workshops. Mind you, that’s not even including the extensive LEGO Star Wars Miniland that was unveiled last year with much fanfare!
Star Wars Themed LEGO My Own Creation Competition
One of the main events that truly celebrated the fans’ passion about the series was the Star Wars themed LEGO My Own Creation Competition. It began four-months ago, where LEGO and Star War fans all over Asia were invited by LUG of Malaysia to submit their Star Wars themed LEGO model creations – be it a model or a diorama – replicating scenes or your own “fanfiction” of the series.
Just the Junior category was enough to make me feel ashamed. The youngest in the competition, coming in at just five years of age, actually won Top 3 with her Battle of Utapau diorama. Master Builder Stefan, one of the judges, was incredibly impressed with her creation and dynamic depiction of an action scene solely through the use of LEGO bricks. While, I, and the rest of the spectators, were still trying to understand how we were at least quadruple her age and could barely imagine coming up with anything close.
The Grand Prize went to Denil Oh in the Master Builder Catergory, who presented a stunning LEGO re-creation of any fans’ dream; May The Force Arise in LEGOLAND. I cannot decide which was more amazing! An actual moving Tie Fighter Ferris wheel or Darth Vader’s Hot Dance show, featuring some of his most Micheal Jackson-like stormtroopers. Is there a petition somewhere I can sign to make this a reality?
Well, while LEGOLAND decides if it wants to make my dreams come true, I can at least head over to the LEGO Star Wars Miniland where all the winning entries will be displayed in their full glory till end July 2015!
LEGO Star Wars Miniland
Of course, we must not leave out Master Builder Stefan and his team’s 8,000 man hours’ worth of hard work. Made up of 1.5 million LEGO bricks, with the largest vehicle being the Clone Turbo Tank in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith at 10,180 bricks and 350 hours, and the smallest being our beloved Yoda at 30 bricks. They have successfully re-created the most iconic scenes and battles from the series, allowing park-goers views they have never seen before.
Whether you are a die-hard fan of the series or just a causal tag-along, you will, no doubt, be staring in awe. No matter where you look, and how, it looked like a still from the movies – it even got me binging on all six movies after I got home! I cannot wait till next year, and see what Stefan and his team will be recreating from the next instalment.
Merchandise
To make the whole experience a fulfilling one, you can even walk home with a plethora of LEGO Star Wars merchandises. From T-shirts, keychains of your favourite characters and, of course, LEGO playsets, LEGOLAND Malaysia is having no mercy on my wallet. I fell trap to my obsessions and got myself another model to play with. While I am no Master Builder, I think I did pretty well with my playset!
At just about an hour from the central of Singapore, it makes a perfect getaway during the weekend or even a day-trip for the Star Wars fanatics or the whole family. There’s a hotel to park yourself at, and, even, a new waterpark for some great summer fun. Here’s hoping that they expand their resort to include more of LEGO’s star products, and, maybe, Stefan might have to get in touch with his feminine side for a Disney Princess-themed miniland.
