Singapore’s skies got a little brighter today for Korea’s hottest male star, Joo Won, has arrived on our sunny shores! He is here to promote his highly-rated Korean drama, The Gang Doctor, currently showing on Singtel TV (CH 513, 604) and Starhub TV (CH 124, 820 and 823). His co-star and newcomer, Park Hye Su joins him in answering some burning questions from the media before their highly-anticipated fan meet happening at Suntec City North Atrium tonight (10 October 2015) at 7.15PM.
The Gang Doctor tells the story of a medical prodigy, Yong Pal (Joo Won) with incredible surgery skills forced to make illicit house calls to the wealthy to support his sister’s (Park Hye Su) dialysis treatment. On one such assignment, he meets an heiress, Han Yeo Jin (Kim Tae Hee) kept in an induced coma by her brother, Jo Hyun Jae (Han Do Joon) in an attempt to keep the inheritance to himself. After being rescued from her predicament, she embarks on a revenge against those who have plotted against her.

As it was his first time here, the inevitable question on how he finds our lovely island was asked. And, it looks like the haze cleared up at the right time. He loves how beautiful Singapore is thanks to all the greenery and felt fresh coming to this country. Here’s hoping that this good impression will last and, before long, we will see him coming back more often!
He continues on, saying that he feels incredibly lucky to be involved in this hit drama. It was his second time involved in a medical drama and was, more than happy to say that “Gang Doctor” has completely changed his mind on taking on the role of a doctor. Still intimidated by the complicated medical terms, he enjoys the differences in the character; a pure, character focused on humility versus a rough, thick-skinned individual fighting for justice.
Hye Su adds on a couple of good words, complimenting how Joo Won “oppa” was there to help ease her into the role. She reminiscences how her first scene was a meal with Joo Won’s character, a.k.a. her brother, Yong Pal. The chemistry between them was so natural, it truly felt like a family scene, ridding her of all the thoughts and nerves she had up till the shot. Isn’t that sweet?
Of course, the show grabbed everyone’s attention because of its action! Joo Won confesses that filming the drama was physically taxing. He even lost 7KG and had to go six days without sleep! As someone who did most of the stunts himself, it was no surprise. Still, he shocked all describing the dangers he faced when filming a car chase scene. In a car jam packed full of cameras, he had to drive with little to no view! Not even a stunt driver could pull that off without feeling a little nervous, I bet. Nevertheless, he is glad he did it as it turned out amazing on screen. Well, me too, Joo Won.
Hilarity ensued when asked about what sort of advice they would give to their fifteen year old selves. Joo Won adorably admits he was in “dark period.” He was a studious kid who missed out on a lot, including one of Korea’s biggest sporting events – the World Cup. He wants to tell the him from back then, to enjoy a little more and not miss out on having fun! Hye Su shows her filial side, confessing that she had a bit of rebellious streak back then and did not spend as much time with her family as she should. She would want to tell her 15 year old self to be a better daughter!
Hye Su may just be a co-star but her role in the drama is vital the Yong Pal’s character. She is after all the sole reason he works for the gangsters, getting the money he needs for her dialysis treatment. I felt their chemistry during this quick interview as they supported each other in their answers. Looks like I will have to check out more of the show to see those two in action!
