For someone who had never experienced what the 80’s were like, the performance of Dirty Dancing at the MasterCard Theatre at Marina Bay Sands was an enjoyable theatrical extravaganza and a heartfelt reflection of the hopes and dreams of the 80’s. This worldwide-hit musical tells the story of Baby (Bryony Whitfield), the teenage daughter of an affluent family who stumbles upon a world of “dirty dancing” and learns unexpected lessons about love, life and dreams through a chance encounter with the attractive dance instructor, Johnny Castle (Gareth Bailey). Romance blossoms and sizzles on stage as the couple dance their way through the course of a few unexpected events that force them to make tough choices.
Audiences can expect an emphasis on spectacular scenes of music and dance. The theatrical backdrops lend a dream-like feel to the story, especially through the development of Baby’s and Johnny’s relationship which takes the audiences through some breathtaking natural scenery. Not to be left out, the passionate and beautifully synchronized dirty dancing scenes between the teenage lovers add a fresh take on young love. Special mentions to be given for the comical efforts shown during scenes of Baby’s clumsy attempts when she first started to learn how to dance. This feel-good story takes us through themes we can relate to and characters we feel for. If you had watched the movie production of Dirty Dancing, you may leave the theatre with fresh perspectives on this classic story.
