Lunar New Year is just round the corner. And the year of the Monkey is coming to an end as we look forward to the year of the rooster. Last year, we featured Ang Baos (红包)or red packets with Monkey designs as well as those with generic designs. Many of my readers like you loved those stories. So this year, we decided to make this an annual feature and have managed to get more from Singapore and overseas to feature. So if you are hunting down for the prettiest ang baos for 2017, this article will be a good reference. Likewise, if you are on the receiving end, you will know where your relatives have been shopping by the designs of the ang baos. We had categorised the ang baos from Chicky Ones to Luxury to Simply Elegant for your easy reference.
2017 is the Year of the Rooster. So why not give or collect a “chicky” ang bao to remember this joyous occasion. The thing about red packet designs for zodiac animals is that it challenges the creative juices of the designers. Not all animals are auspicious like the Dragon or cute like the Rabbit. We would say the rooster is on the moderate level for this task and with help of some golden eggs (East Hotel Hong Kong) and cheesy puns (W Singapore – Sentosa Cove), it does make these red packets worth your collection.
MATCHY MATCHIE
Instead of just hunting down red packets, why not find some ang bao bundles that come with bag, pouch or carriers to match your #OOTD. McDonald’s did a great job with the French Fries or McCafe orange carriers which are cute and durable for long term use. And Harbour City Mall from Hong Kong never fails to amaze us with their premium pouches for their season giveaway all year round. Be innovative and start bringing Sun Gold Kiwi fruits for CNY visiting and match it up with kiwi bag & red packets.
LUXURY IS BIG MONEY
In this category, all these red packets will make recipients think that the amount of cash packed in them will be significant. The design and material used for these red packets will make you think that way. Just check out the crystals on the Swarovski ang baos… I think most will assume the red packet itself will cost more than S$10. To put many Asian companies to shame, Qatar Airways has done a better job in their red packet designs year after year and it will definitely go to your must collect list.
TOO CUTE LAH
Cutesy designs will forever be popular, as most of the red packets are given out are to kids and they will have a soft spot for all things kawaii. However, this year we think some adults will be snatching these super cute ang baos from their children, nephews or nieces if they are Pokémon and Iron Man fans. Expanding on the Pokémon campaign at the world’s top airport, Changi Airport is giving away six Pokémons in one pack of ang bao which includes Snorlax. Have you taken part in our Pokémon contest? Hurry! It ends 22 January 2017.Likewise, for Singapore Science Centre’s ongoing Avengers Station Exhibition, they will be giving away Iron Man red packets, that come with a punny greeting based on “Golden Machine” sounds like “Golden Chicken” in Chinese.

SIMPLY ELEGANT
Here are the classy and collectable red packets that will show your sincerity based on their designs. For Nonyas & Babas, you will definitely adore and show your roots with the exquisite Peranakan motifs on Hotel Indigo Singapore Katong‘s red packets. The cheongsam collar on the back of Langham Hotel‘s red packets is a subtle detail to its sophisticated design. Having a modern twist with a maze background, makes OCBC bank red packets stand out from the crowd.
SUPER LOUD
If you want someone to remember the ang baos that you have given to them, the red packets below will be the choice. With loud designs and very very practical shout outs printed over it, it will definitely make the recipients grin and a conversation starter on your choice for these red packets. Who will not want to be SUPER LUCKY and have REAL MONEY in the ang baos?
TRADITIONAL IS GOOD
You are old school and like to keep your ang baos simple, then these will you be for your consideration. FairPrice present a surprise when you piece up four of the designs to get a bigger picture. Cute it you are able to issue out to four siblings.
Wow ! Love them all. Personally I think Mandarin Gallery has the most unique design. Is term of opening. Breaking the tradition kind Angbao. Give it to the designer behind *thumbs up
