The Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta just celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and offers 661 rooms in eight categories from Deluxe to a Presidential Suite.

Taking up 34,000sqm of land space in the centre of Jakarta’s Sudirman business district, the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta has also hosted major events including the World Economic Forum, Business For Environment Dialogue and CIFOR conferences. It is popular for weddings. Dignitaries such as President Barrack Obama, Prince Andrew, Bill Gates and Alicia Keys have stayed int his hotel.

Located some 30km from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, it takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour to get to the hotel from the airport, depending on traffic. And Jakarta is known for its bad traffic jams.

Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta offers a butterfly-shaped swimming pool which is not intended for lap swimming and an accompanying Pool Bar, six other food and beverage outlets, conference rooms, a pillarless ballroom and an oasis with lots of trees that takes you away from the busy streets of Jakarta. The Grand Ballroom can accommodate up to 3,000 people for a reception or 1,000 people for a banquet. There are three other ballrooms with a capacity of 600 for reception and 360 for banquet. Other meeting rooms are also available for MICE Guests.

I had the chance to stay in a 43sqm Deluxe Room at the Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta last month for Air France’s Paris – Singapore – Jakarta inaugural flight and celebrations. The rooms exude a mix of contemporary Indonesian interiors and traditional Javanese batik. My room had an awesome view of the city and the majestic Masjid Al Itisham mosque. This same view is also available from the Lobby Lounge. Free Wi-Fi is available in all guestrooms and public areas in the hotel. The Wi-Fi access is fast and reliable which is another key factor as a returning hotel guest.

Could not resist the aromatic in-house Crispy Mint toiletries that are provided at most Shangri-La Hotels around the world. Packaged in 50ml green bottles, you can expect to be refreshed and smelling good after a shower.

Crispy Mint toiletries in Deluxe rooms are 50ml while the other types of rooms and suites offer larger sizes of 75ml.

The Presidential Suite provides Bulgari Green Tea range of toiletries.

Spacious toilets with separate shower and bath tub areas, toilet and bidet and a wash area.

I had a very good rest on the soft pillows and the king sized bed. Unfortunately, I did not get the chance to check out the health and fitness facilities. Shangri-La Hotel Jakarta’s Health Club and Spa offered an aerobics/dance studio, aromatherapy room, children’s pool, fitness centre, jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and even tennis courts.

Shangri-la Hotel Jakarta houses 407 Deluxe Rooms, 96 Executive Rooms, 118 Horizon Club Rooms, nine Executive Suites, 24 One-Bedroom Suites, three Two Bay Suites, two Three Bay Suites and two Presidential Suites.

The Deluxe Room rate averages US$250.
