Sentosa SPOOKTACULAR 2013 has received a lot of attention this year because of its collaboration with Thai horror movie production studio GTH.  This year’s annual Halloween event is themed with horror box office hits like Coming Soon, Shutter, Body, Dorm and Pee Mak. Staged at the historic Fort Siloso once again, the SUPERADRIANME Fear Explorer Team is back to venture into the horror fest and to  check out Sentosa SPOOKTACULAR 2013 based on different fear benchmarks by four individuals.

SPOOKTACULAR is back with Thai Horror theme

The four profiles are:

  • The Brave – someone who braved the entire 50 minutes of haunted trails at the Haunted Hospital in Fuji Q in Japan, known as one of the world’s largest & scariest haunted trail
  • The Timid – one disinclined to any approach and easily frightened, but at the same time playful and willing to try out new things
  • The Cam Whore – one who craved for that perfect moment, perfect spot to frame and snap the PERFECT SHOT
  • The Babe – a demure girl who has never been to SPOOKTACULAR and claims to be fearless to haunted house gimmicks before the visit

So depending on which persona you feel fit to you best, here are the reviews on SPOOKTACULAR 2013 by our Fear Explorer Team:

The Brave

Apart from the repeated costumes for “Chaba” from Coming Soon, actors were rather interactive. Entertaining but not scary. In my point of view, the maze at The Dorm was the best in relative comparison. Dark space and moments of silence, it was able to bring out some ghostly ambience. SPOOKTACULAR is entertaining but not scary.

The Timid

The haunted houses provide enough scares for the adults and some fun element for the younger audience too. Even though I am “timid” for scare fest, but I was able to roam through the haunted house with ease and laughter. But I did witness a couple of girls getting ditched by their male companions in a haunted house and the girls got really freaked out. Head straight to Pee Mak haunted zone if you want some fun and make friends with the friendly ghosts while waiting for the queue.

The Cam Whore

Overall the attempt to create the atmosphere was commendable especially the smoke and fake moon, dead bodies hanging on the walls. The lighting was however too glaring for good ambient photo taking. Some of the gory props are actually quite well made. However the faces for the ghosts are quite repetitive and gets dull after sometime. The dungeons are actually quite suitable for ghostly scares but wasn’t really fully utilized. The Shutter is the best haunted house because it is the only air conditioned place at Fort Siloso.

The Babe

The ghost sounds that echoes through the places via the sound system can be quite eerie but does have a negative effect of making it less realistic. The maze in The Dorm was the most interesting spot as it gives a sense of unknown, not knowing what you will encounter at every nook and corner. The ghosts however need to be more professional as you will spot them getting out of their roles and joking with each other from a distance ruining the mood of the scare fest.

The Verdict

SPOOKTACULAR have been giving us constant improvement for Sentosa Island’s annual Halloween scare fest. With the collaboration with GTH, the Thai horror elements help to elevate the fear factor and spookiness of the haunted house. But it seems like less effort has been put into the makeup and concept of roam scare actors along the trails to the haunted houses when compared to last year.

Overall, SPOOKTACULAR 2013 did little in scaring any of Fear Explorer Team members but the team enjoyed taking pictures with the friendly ghosts. And the good mix of scares and comedic moments to keep the ambiance balanced for a group of friends to enjoy during the Halloween season. 80% of the tickets have already been sold, so if you do not want to miss the fun, get you tickets fast!
