REVIEW: Sony Handycam GWP88 Waterproof Camcorder

Sony Handycam HDR-GWP88 - Adventure Cam With Pico Projector

It’s been a year since we shared our review for the waterproof camcorder, Sony Handycam GW77. Now with Sony Handycam GWP88, this series of waterproof camcorders just gets better, with more waterproof depth of up to 10 meters which also comes with a pico projector that lets you project your videos on to any surface under dim lit rooms.  All these features for only S$999 (S$100 cheaper than the GW77 during launch).

The Sony Handycam GWP88 still maintains the good video quality from GW77 but comes slightly bulkier because of added functionality such as the pico projector.  However, it still fits into any small pouch or bag ready for you when you need it. Sony has also made a couple of tweaks to improve the user experience on the camcorder. It has added a front facing record button for selfie video recording and there is a zoom dial for smoother control when you need to zoom in closer to your subject and a mini stand on the base to place it on table tops when needed.

  1. Great! Thanks, Dennis 🙂

  2. Thanks Dennis,

actually Sony S’pore is having some sort of sale:
    http://www.sony.com.sg/microsite/promotions/handycam/
But strangely lists the GW77 at a $100 higher price than the GWP88.

    • Still go for the GWP88, cos i forgot to mention that GWP88 have a deeper water resistant at 10 meters when compared with GW77’s 5 meter. And the freebie wide angle lens will be useful too, which i think is only sold in Hong Kong and Japan.

  3. Hi,

I was wondering if you could give me some feedback. I’m trying to decide between the earlier Sony GW77 Camcorder that you reviewed & this latest model (GWP88). Looking at the youtube video samples uploaded by others, I get the feeling that the earlier GW77 has better daylight video quality (esp the colour quality). Is it my imagination or does the newer GWP88’s videos look more “washed out” when it comes to the colours taken during daytime. Any thoughts? Please PM me at my given e-mail. Thank you very much 🙂

    • Hi Jack,

to me the video quality are the same for GW77 and GWP88. And i think Sony Stores in Singapore no longer carry the GW77, so you only left with one choice now.
