Taiwan’s EVA Air joins the Star Alliance network earlier this week after successfully completing all the joining requirements. EVA Airways is Taiwan’s first privately owned international airline formed in 1989 as an affiliate of Evergreen Group and sister company to global container-shipping leader Evergreen Line. It flew its first scheduled flight in 1991 and currently serves a network of business and leisure destinations in Asia, Oceania, Europe and North America. EVA Air has a fleet of 61 Boeing, McDonnell Douglass and Airbus aircraft.
The sixteen year old Star Alliance has built its presence in Asia Pacific with eight member carriers based in this region. Star Alliance currently has 19 member airlines operating more than 4,000 daily flights to, from and within the Asia Pacific region serving 280 airport s in 44 countries.
EVA Air’s customers will have access to a global network of 28 airlines, operating more than 21,900 daily flights to 1,328 airports in 195 countries. EVA Air will bring Kaoshiung in Taiwan and Surabaya in Indonesia as unique airports to the network as well as expand the Alliance’s presence on the important Cross-Straits market. Taiwan’s geographic location also has the shortest average distance to all major cities in the Asia-Pacific region.
Star Alliance now offers 10 hubs across Asia Pacific including:
- Tokyo – Narita and Haneda
- Seoul – Incheon
- Beijing
- Shanghai – Pudong
- Taipei – Taoyuan
- Shenzhen
- Bangkok
- Singapore
- Auckland
By joining Star Alliance, EVA Air now offers through check-in to the final destination for connecting flights operated by any Star Alliance member airline for both passengers and baggage. EVA Air Infinity MileageLands Frequent Flyer programme will also be able to earn and redeem miles on Star Alliance member airlines. MileageLands Diamond and Gold Card holders now enjoy Star Alliance Gold Status entitling members to privileges and access to more than 1,000 lounges globally, extra baggage allowance on all Star Alliance member airlines and priority baggage delivery. Members of Star Alliance member airlines will also be able to enjoy these when travelling on EVA Air.
