12 March 2013, Singapore – Le Noir – The Intimate Side of Cirque premieres in Singapore tonight at MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands.  We spoke to Irina Naumenko from Russia who performs the contortion act Hand Balance. Irina is set to wow audiences with her flexible yet elegant and breathtaking movements on the one-metre tall canes.

Irina was born in 1983 in a small city in central Russia, Marks. She joined the Children’s Circus in her hometown when she was 11 and discovered her love on the stage. She has since performed in contortion, hand balancing, group acrobatics, mixed pair, juggling and skipping rope.

At 18 years old, Irina joined the Russian Circus State Company of Moscow as a solo hand balancer and contortionist. A year later, she won the gold medal at the International Circus Festival in Enschede, Netherlands. In 2003, she joined Cirque du Soleil’s Varekai production as its female lead and travelled the world with the show for eight years, visiting more than 50 cities in five continents.

She settled down with her family in Montreal, Canada after giving birth to a boy in 2011.

Irina performs to express her duality as a fierce character as a woman, while exposing a vulnerable and graceful soul.  She is in Singapore performing with Le Noir till end of March 2013 leaving her husband to take care of her 19 month old boy whom she misses dearly.
