14 October 2012, Roswell, New Mexico – Austrian skydiver and BASE jumper, Felix Baumgartner, 43, accomplished his mission for Red Bull Stratos to become the first man to achieve supersonic speed at freefall. Jumping off from the edge of space at 120,000 feet in a stratospheric balloon, Red Bull Stratos aims to deliver data for medical and scientific advancement for the future of space exploration from Felix Baumgartner’s jump.
Felix Baumgartner is no stranger here in Asia. In 1999, he claimed the world record for the highest parachute jump from a building by jumping off from Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur. In 2007, he jumped off from the then tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 in Taipei, Taiwan.
Here are the records that Felix Baumgartner achieved from Red Bull Stratos:
- First to Reach Supersonic Speed in Freefall: First person to break the speed of sound and achieve Mach 1.24 in freefall, estimated 1,342.8 km/h
- Freefall from Highest Altitude: Expected jump from 39,045 meters (A Boeing 747 cruises at only 14,000 metres)
- Highest Manned Balloon Flight: Expected ascent to 39,045 meters
- Highest Live Stream Viewership on YouTube with 7.1 million viewing concurrently, that’s more than 10 times for London Olympic Games
