2 April 2012, Sydney – AirAsia X inaugural flight D7 222 departed Kuala Lumpur’s LCCT last night at 11.40pm and landed this morning at 9.45am at the Kingsford Smith International Airport (SYD) in Sydney, Australia. This is after many years of trying to connect Kuala Lumpur to Sydney to open new opportunities for travel and tourism between the two countries. D7 223 departed Sydney at 10.55am for Kuala Lumpur.
The Airbus A330-300 aircraft with 12 Premium flatbed seats and 365 Economy seats from Kuala Lumpur to Sydney was 88% filled while the return flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur was 98% filled.
The daily flights and 2 year marketing partnership between AirAsia, Destination New South Wales (NSW) are expected to inject an estimated A$138 million into New South Wales every year. AirAsia’s network opens up Sydney to over 78 citiies and millions of people across Asia. Destination NSW hopes to increase tourism from key Asian markets such as Malaysia, China and Singapore.
Guests from Singapore can discover Sydney via AirAsia X connecting flights from Singapore to Sydney. Sydney is AirAsia X’s fourth destination in Australia after Gold Coast, Melbourne and Perth. AirAsia X began operations into Australia with flights to the Gold Coast in November 2007.
Present at the press conference this morning at Sydney Airport were AirAsia X Chairwoman, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz, AirAsia X CEO Azran Osman-Rani, Sydney Airport CEO Kerrie Mather and Destination NSW CEO Sandra Chipchase.
Kerrie Mather, Sydney Airport’s CEO said “Asia is one of our strongest growth markets for inbound tourism, with Malaysian tourism to NSW growing by nine per cent last year.”
