19 August 2011, Singapore – Fans of The untold story of the witches of Oz, Broadway’s biggest blockbuster WICKED is coming to Singapore 7 December 2011 for a strictly limited season. Tickets go on sale today.
WICKED, The Musical has won 35 major awards including a Grammy and three Tony Awards including nominations for the Best Musical, Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, to name a few. WICKED has been performed worldwide for 8 years and has grossed over US$2.2 billion with nearly 28 million people watching it worldwide. It opened in London’s West End in September 2006 where over £100,000 worth of tickets were sold in its first hour of sales. It has since gone on to set the all-time record for highest weekly gross in west end history as at January 2,2011, taking in £1,002,885
In 2007, a Japanese language production of WICKED opened in Tokyo and a German version opened in Stuttgart. It has been running in Australia since 2008. Singapore can expect the same great quality performance from the Australian cast.
The musical tells the untold story of the Witches of Oz, long before Dorothy from Wizards of Oz dropped in. The story line is about two girls meeting in the Land of Oz and how these two girls from opposite sides of life become close friends. The Wicked Witch of the West Elphaba was born with emerald green skin who is smart, fiery and often misunderstood while the other, Glinda the Good is a beautiful ambitious and very popular girl. Glinda’s innocent yet ‘bimbotic’ role in the musical will give you endless laughter while Elphaba will evoke your emotion of pity.
Enjoy the beautiful music and lyrics of Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Pippin, Academy Award-winner for Pocahontas and The Prince of Egypt). Made even more popular on TV Glee and in the upcoming 1st episode of The Kitchen Musical to be released in October in Asia is Defying Gravity. Another favourite is Popular and For Good.
