Changi Airport Group recently retired the analogue flight information display boards at Changi Airport Terminal 2 earlier last month. One of the two remaining iconic boards will be donated to the National Heritage Board to form part of Singapore’s National Collection.
The flip board used to be located between Check-in rows 9 and 10 at the departure hall. Each flip board consists of one large display board, 48 panels forming the backboard, over 50 metal casings and 2,052 capsules of individual alphabets and numbers.
When pieced together, each flip board measures 4.5 metres heigh x 15m long and 0.3m wide. It has been undergoing de-installation in various stages in February.
Changi Airport used the flip board to welcome Joseph Schooling home on 15 August 2016 after his record-breaking Olympic gold medal win at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
Over 2,000 pieces of capsules, panels and casing were documented by NHB and transported to its storage facility for cleaning. It will take an estimated six months to complete the cleaning after which the components will be transferred to NHB’s Heritage Conservation Centre to be accessioned as part of the National Collection. Conservators will assess the condition of the components of the flip board, and recommend necessary plans for conservation and storage. CAG and NHB will explore future possibilities for display.
