The United Arab Emirates (UAE) celebrated its 44th National Day on 2 December 2015. It gained its independence from the British in 1971.
The UAE is made up of seven emirates including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm al-Quwain, Ras al-Khaimah and Fujairah. Each of the seven emirates is governed by its own monarch and one of them is selected as the President of the UAE. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is the current President.
The capital of the UAE sits in Abu Dhabi, though Dubai is commonly mistaken as the capital as it is also the largest city of the Emirates.
The UAE flag has four colours. The colours green, white, black and red stand for Arabian unity.
We’ve only visited Abu Dhabi previously. Some of the attractions we went to included the magnificent Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the Yas Marina Circuit where the Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Formula One Grand Prix is held every year.
The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is most spectacular with 82 domes inspired by various Islamic architectural styles including Moroccan and Moghul. The floral design courtyard features flora found in Arabia such as the Iris and Lily. This was created by thousands of small white and coloured marble pieces. The external court yard is flanked by over 1,000 columns. Inside the main prayer hall, the wool and cotton carpet is one of the largest hand-knotted carpets in the mosques around the world. The chandelier in the main prayer hall is impressive making it one of the largest in mosques around the world. The glass panels are encrusted with Swarovski crystals.
We have also stayed in spacious and luxurious hotels there including the Fairmont Bab Al Bahr with over the water views of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque as well as the St. Regis Abu Dhabi. We also stayed at the Westin Abu Dhabi Golf Resort and Spa last December when Etihad Airways unveiled their new uniforms as well as their first Airbus A380 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Etihad Airways was recently awarded Best First Class as well as Best Long Haul Airline in the Middle East and Africa by airlineratings.com
