REVIEW: HTC One max – Bigger is Better

HTC One max Coming To SingTel, M1 and StarHub on 2 November

HTC One max is the bigger and better version of its predecessor, the HTC One. A lot of new upgrades and additional features have been built into the new HTC One max, so you are actually paying for these new features and not just for a bigger screen.

HTC  One max Features

The 5.9″ Full HD 1080p display is clear and sharp, works well even under harsh sunlight and a delightful entertainment experience when watching video on-the-go.

The new Scribble app on the HTC One max lets you jot down important notes with your finger tips on the sensitive large screen. Now the stylus has become optional. Other than scribbling, the app also allows you to add pictures, voice memos and preloaded whimsical stickers onto your notes. The Scribble app is a good initiative by HTC, albeit not as intuitive when compared with the Air Command apps on the Samsung GALAXY Note 3. That said, it will still come in handy when you need to jot down something quickly.

Besides the larger screen, the other obvious difference between the HTC One max and the HTC One is the fingerprint scanner at the back of the phone. Those with small hands may find it awkward to scan with one hand. The size of the phone makes it a little difficult to stretch your index finger to slide down the scanner.

Initially, you may mistake the lens as the scanner, dirtying the lens with your fingerprints. This feature can be disabled and replaced with the conventional passcode lock.

Review HTC One max

HTC One max is also the first in the HTC One series to have a removable back cover that lets you insert your SIM card and microSD card. With a 16GB onboard memory, the expandable memory with microSD card slot gives you more room to store your favourite video and music to enjoy them on the go.

HTC BlinkFeed and HTC Zoe received minor upgrades with the release of HTC One max.  These updates will probably be released to the the rest of the HTC One series with a software update in the future. HTC BlinkFeed now lets you add more sources to your social media feed onto your homescreen and a quick access menu appears with a left swipe. More editing controls have been added to creating Video Highlights.

Performance

HTC BoomSounds works better on the HTC One max, making the speakers even louder and clearer than the HTC One. In order to make it the ultimate media player, it is boosted with a 3,300mAh battery that allows the phone to last a day with extensive usage.

The UltraPixel camera on the HTC One max still takes good quality photos even though it lacks the image stabiliser found on the HTC One. It still retains that ultra wide angle lens on both cameras and now it allows Dual Capture mode if you want to capture both the subject and yourself in same picture or video.

The performance of the quad core processor is smooth and swift. No lag or crashes occurred when we tested out the HTC One max.

HTC One max Verdict

The HTC One max is HTC’s answer to a phablet.  However it loses out to its competition because it does not come with minimised keyboard to allow it be used with one hand. It also lacks the multitasking features such as split screens that is available on other smartphones.

The size of HTC One max is even bigger than the Samsung GALAXY Note 3. However, the aluminium chassis on the HTC One max feels sleeker and more premium. HTC One max will be the obvious choice if you are seeking an on-the-go multimedia hub.
