Travel: How To Safeguard Yourself From Snatch Thefts

1Malaysia Street Food Festival

After recently returning from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia during a media trip at the official launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2014, I thought it was interesting The Royale Chulan Kuala Lumpur hotel where we stayed provided all hotel guests with a Crime Prevention Guide.

The guide had tips of the where, when and ways to avoid to avoid being a victim of crime. I had mixed sentiments – a lack of reassurance of the safety withing the safety as well as another emotion of self awareness. Then again, we all need to be reminded of the precautions to take especially when we often take for granted of such safety tips.

Where Snatch Thefts Normally Occur

  • During the dark on deserted roads
  • Usually on motorcycles

When Are Snatch Thefts Likely To Occur

  • The early hours of the morning or late evening
  • Deserted and quiet roads or streets
  • Crowded public areas such as rushing to board the train or bus

  • Do not display cash and expensive jewellery in public
  • Hold your handbag under your armpit on the opposite side of vehicle traffic
  • Do not sling your handbag over your shoulder
  • Avoid quiet and deserted streets or alleys
  • Try to walk against the vehicle traffic flow so you can see what is coming ahead
